I am trying to find out how many people have had their oil tanks crack. In March of 05 my husband and I, along with neighbours, all ordered 2006 RS Vector GTs. To date, three of these machines have had their oil tanks crack. (We can't track the forth machine as it was dealt in 07.) These have been hair line cracks at the bottom of the tank, perpendicular to the seam. I am aware of at least 2 others, and am interested in finding out how many other people have dealt with this. Yamaha is saying that it is not a manufacturer's defect however they have upgraded the part and given it a new part number. Makes me wonder why if there was never a problem with them to begin with.
Anyway, just interested in others stories. I am in the process of drafting a letter to Yamaha to express my concerns. I lost three riding days in Cochrane on my March holidays when hubby's tank went, and a day on my February holidays when mine when. Luckily we were much closer to home then.
Thanks.

YammyMammy,
I have an 06 RS Vector GT and I also have had to replace my oil tank at a cost of about $230. My dealer only said, "Wow, that's odd! Will that be cash or credit card?" He made no effort to pursue a warranty claim. I guess I should expect that when I told him I had about 3800 miles on the sled...BUT...now that I hear this is a common issue, I'm feeling that Yammie should step up and cover this ... and of course,,,,reimburse me. I'm very curious as to how many people had this problem at very inopportune times and may have suffered engine damage as a result of this condition. I consider myself lucky. I had just made a 20 mile high speed run on a railbed between Cheboygan (MI) and Mackinaw City when my wife said she was cold and needed to use the restroom so we made an unplanned stop at Mackinaw City. As I was taking my helmet off I noticed oil dripping from my right side cover. I flipped up the hood, then removed the side panel to discover the leak. I then obtained a trailer and got the sled home. I then drained the remaining oil and found I only had about pint remaining in the tank. I had not noticed any warning light to indicate low oil. I was lucky that we stopped. The next leg of our trip was to be about 15 more miles of railbed. I also ride with friends that all have Yammies...(4 Vectors, 1 Attack, and 1 Phazer...) I'm the only one who has experienced this problem...YET! They are all watching their tanks... PROBLEM...my therory...study the design of the front portion of this Delta Box chassis and you can see that in rough conditions, or extreme riding (jumping) the forward portion will flex with the pressure exerted upon the front suspension. The manner in which the oil tank is attached to the upper and lower portion of the Delta Box frame members causes it to twist with the flexing of the chassis. It's a poor mounting design for this tank. Yammie should recall these sleds and refit the tanks in a manner which will prevent this from occuring.
