Anyone heard about the snow storm coming to northern IL and southern WI? Does anyone think the trails will be opened up and know where I can find that information? I'm located in Lake Geneva (Walworth county). I just bought a sled and I want to get some use out of it.

Trails in southern WI close March 15th.......its going to be heavy wet stuff which isn't good for riding anyhow.

Straight from a DNR officer:
"There is no law about when you can snowmobile, just some regs on
conditions, or specific trails may be open or closed" (by the clubs)
You will have to called the hotline for the place you want to snowmobile.

What?!? Heavy wet snow is the best because it stays put. Light fluffy snow is the kind that is worthless because after a few sleds go by its gone.
My advice would be just to check with the local clubs and see what they plan to do. The club that I belong to closes the trails when there is less than 6" on the ground and the temps are above 34 degrees.

If we get this much I'll be tearing up the Harvard area for sure. All our marked trails are still up but I heard today the Walworth (Town) area had markers being pulled already.

Im hoping for a big one. There is only one place left that I didnt get to this year that was on my list. It has been very high on the list but not done yet. I have heard there is a trail to the front door and its free to get in IF you ride a sled there. I have had a few sandwichs here and they arent bad at all. GREAT service staff and cold beverages. Possibly a little side entertainment as well. Anyone else up for trying to make a run to the Vegas Gentlemans Club friday about 12-1 afternoon?

Since when???? Our club trails don't offically close till march 31 at 12am. But don't expect them to open unless therr is 6"+ and cold weather in the forseeable forcast. Which there is not. Most clubs are out of money for grooming also. The trails that I am in charge of are under water, Good luck with any snow in those areas. They are all mud also.

Knucklehead, the ground is soft from the warm weather, mix that with wet sloppy snow and it melts from the bottom up. heavy snow is good when the ground is cold.

Ace, your the one that stated trails in souther wi were closed on the 15th not me, you never gave a particular county and last time I checked rock was in southern wi.
Please give me a link where you found/know when the trails close... This is all I found..
Normally Rock County Trails are open Dec. 1st - April 1st, provided there is a 4" min. snow base and temps are 34.F. or lower.
I realize this is for rock county and not walworth.
He doesn't ask specificly for walworth in the begining, now does he. He just states southern and northern il.

Well to be more accurate, I'm the President of the Walworth County Snowmobile Alliance and our trails officially close March 31st @ 11:59 p.m..........LOL There are a few variables to this though, if some clubs have started pulling out their section of trail it may be difficult to open them due to "holes" within the trail system. At that point our prime objective is to protect our landowners and we will not open the trails. If/when we get the snow, I will be in contact with the clubs to see who has done what with trail markers. I think everyone can understand that without landowners permission our trails cease to exist. I'm certainly not going to let the last snow of the year screw something up for next year.
So if/when we get the snow, call our snowphone @ (262)742-2664 for up to date conditions.
BTW there is a trail right to the Show Palace, and the Vegas Club is across the street from the trail...........LOL My buddy owns the Corners Bar and you can park there as long as you visit his establishment also!

Woo its pretty soft under there. Just got in from a 5 mile loop and oh boy does the mud rear its ugly head. Went through a field, winter wheat no less, and wouldnt take any more than one pass there as its pretty easy to blast the snow out to mud. The plowed feilds are fine and it all smooths right out, not bumpy at all. Hit a known wash or recently small creek and left a mud trail a quarter mile long thru the wheat. Some nice face shot drifts though and the roads rock. Enough that the carbides dont spark and turning is easy. Looks like we are on the downside of it though so its as good as it gets. Damn

I am talking about the ground being warm and not frozen. I don't care what kind of snow it is, when the ground is not frozen it will melt from the bottom. This is exactly what is happening.

Yep, Sat. June 28th, as the date gets closer I will have more info.
BTW I did not open the trails in Walworth County. We had a couple of clubs start pulling signs, and with the soft ground underneath we thought there would be to great of a potential to damage wheat fields and alfalfa fields. Sorry, but we didn't get the dumping they said we were going to get, and I just don't want to take any chances with our landowners.

Oh by the way, I dont know where you get the idea that the ground isnt frozen, because it is. Even here in southern Wisconsin we still have at least 3-4" of frost in the ground.
Try to stay with me and understand this one. When you have bright sunshine, you get very quick snow melting anywhere that has exposed ground because the ground is usually a dark color, so it doesnt reflect heat.

Im not sure where you found this 3"-4" of frost as I have been checking all winter and only found frost right next to plowed/exposed areas over 2 weeks ago and zero since. Anywhere below the snow, that was left undisturbed, didnt have frost just a layer of ice above the soil since the January rain. Even before that I couldnt find any. The tools I use include a soil compaction probe that measures resistance, a soil core sample probe 2'long and a soil temp thermometer aprox. 6".
Where and how did you find this frost?
As a side note I find it interesting that I posted that I was riding thru a mud strewn winter wheat field, which ripped the schnot out of it and nobody chewed my butt. If this had been a "on the trail" field it would make a farmer P.Oed and possibly end up in trail closure/rerouting, which WOULD effect everyone. I should have started with "I was drinking some beers and....." that seems to unleash some wrath:) FWIW it was a private field and no snowmobile trails were put at risk.

I was going to say something. I just put the little guy getting his nuts kicked for the people sledding on closed trails.
I have jumped the gun on a few guys for riding when trails were closed/open. These trail agencys need to get together and make sure they all know that they are open or closed.
There is still frost in the ground where I am cutting woods(father-in-laws), You sink down about 3" and then it is solid ice. I had a real bitch pulling some of my trail markers last week. They were froze in the ground. The one feild you could see the ice under the mud where I walked.

Hey Red, I did see a flat rack wagon with wood on it this AM and a old pick up truck stuck and left over night. Shes not only stuck but froze in for now. I could see how there may have been some frost in the woods as the only areas I checked were out in the open.
DITTO on the agency's need to get together. The Wisconsin tourism snow conditions already has a start on this but with a little nudging to get folks to report there more frequently might be a start???
Great day to ya!
