Welcome Freeze.
Are you talking sled insurance or vehicle? You only have one option for vehicle and that is Manitoba Public Insurance. MPI rapes you for sled insurance though. Go thru JJ Reich for sled insurance. We don't have any enforced speed limits. Some of the trails have a recommended speed limit signs on them.

trail speed i dont think theres one, 85 bucks buys a pass, insurance isnt bad, season is around 6-7 months of the year (for SOME of us), no need to worry about lack of snow (for most of the province), season starts early.

still minimum 3 weeks of sledding left for this year (here anyways 5 hours from wpg) and probably more if the forcast doesnt change.

Lac du Bonnet/Pinawa/Pine Falls/Nopiming area is the best for trails. Lac du Bonnet is kind of the "hub" of that trail system, and is about a 1.5 hr ride from Winnipeg. Sledding season is usually mid-December to mid-March.
Trail permits?
Snoman (snowmobilers of Manitoba) SnoPass is required for trails. It's $85 before Nov.1 and $110 after, but they may be going up a bit.

Not required but is recommended. You can get it through Manitoba Public Insurance, or a private company like JJ Reich. JJ Reich is just over half the cost of MPI, so I use them.
speed limit?
Balls to the walls! ylsuper.gif
No speed limits except for through parks, usually 30 kph but as long as you're doing a reasonable speed they don't bug you. You can do 100 mph down a ditch if you want to
.

Welcome Freeze! What part of town you moving into? We have a house for sale (wink wink) lol.

Welcome. If you bought a cabin, Id buy one in Woodridge or Lac Du Bonnet. Best riding in both those areas besides up north.
polarisguy05
1991, have you rode anywhere besides where your cabin is?

and welcome freeze, delgaty has his date wrong for the snopass price change, its december 1st.

and basically you can ride any way from the city and find good stuff, i mainly go north but tons of trails to the east. and we normally have a decent winter

Permits here are $180 then 230 after Dec 1st so $100 will be a nice change, I don't mind paying the $180 here as I have been involved with the clubs here for a few yrs trail brushing, writing the club news letter collumn, club facebook site and have been on the executive the past 3 or 4 yrs,so $85 will be peanuts

I payed $199 for sled insurance as it was required on my 01 ZR

I seen the Whiteshell(sp?) area(on the border) trails 2 weeks ago they look like the ones back here in Ontario

Ya I read about the car insurance I have to change it within 3months of living in Manitoba,I pay $54 a month here for plpd(basic) on a 97 Grand Am with clean driving record

Any idea how much I would pay there???

Going sledding this weekend here, trails were mint this past weekend and should be good for another 2 weeks
polarisguy05
couldnt even guess. i think should be close to the same for your car

How much do you think your sled is worth? Just my comparison with JJ Reich I paid $288 for fire/theft/collision on my sled insured for $6000.

someone on this subform sold a 98 800cc sled with almost 10000miles for 2850 so you would be able to get 3 no problem. but for a quick sale 2700

As for sled insurance there is about 3 private companies you can buy insurance from that is better coverage than jj riech and is cheaper, check out Essex insurance in any superstore.
SNOWTOBOGANNER
Welcome to Friendly Manitoba. (I still think that's better than Spirited Energy)

As far as sledding goes, the trail pass is cheaper and the insurance is cheaper.

Now to rain on your parade...

I too am from Northern Ontario and KNOW you are going to miss the prolonged riding season, and the meticulously maintained trails (if you are a trail rider) IMO. Our local club here had the groomer out more than ever this season it appeared, but you need snow to groom and we did not get much this year. Snow Index Look at Northern Ontario, and then look at Winnipeg. The season is done for most people around here. (In southern Manitoba)

Its not all bad though. There are a few gems to be had around here. It all depends how far you want to travel and your riding style.

So what brings you to Winnipeg?

Can you provide more details regarding these other private insurance companies? I just changed to jj riech this year and it's half the price of what MPI cost me, but if there's other insurance companies out there that are better yet, AND cheaper, I would love to know. You can pm me if you don't want to advertise it publicly. Or, you can just tell me to mind my own business too. I don't mind if you honestly don't want to say. :-)

Where in NK do you live???

There is great sledding very close to Winnipeg for sure. The trails are accessible right close to the Perimeter Highway, and from there, you can pretty much go anywhere. Or, an hour of trailering will get you right into the Whiteshell, Falcon or Woodridge areas which are fabulous.

For a short ride close to the city, I like to start out at the Perimeter and Roblin boulevard, hop onto the Assiniboine river and then over to St. Francis Xavier, hop onto the trail then head to Starbuck, Elie and then back. When the river is good and the trails are freshly groomed you can easily move along at 70-80 mph. To change it up, hop onto the Lasalle river and enjoy a slower and twistier ride.

The prairie winds play havoc with the unsheltered trails closeby though, so you need to watch out for hard drifts. Make sure your hand warmers work too...! thumbsup.png

Well I'm sort of on the border b/w NK and EK, I live on Edison. I think the border is basically Gateway/Raleigh and I'm west of that. If I were only a few blocks north of Springfeild I could ride out the door, but I'm stuck trailering.
cobragt
Start at floodway north on highway 59 or at highway 15 and take the Springfield Pathfinders and Springhill Trailblaers trails anywhere to the Beaches, Seddons Corner, Pinawa, the Whiteshell, the Sandilands area even Rosseau, Hecla Island, Gimili, the Interlake. Best place to ride from closest to Winnipeg. It all connnects.

Remember the season is not over go a ride now at Seddons Corner.

Your sled needs a can LOL. Shell Advance I see, they don't even put it on display here, gotta ask for it b/c they order alot and no place to put it. $26/gallon full synthetic, can't go wrong. I'd like to go back to Amsoil/Torco like I used to run but I can't justify spending extra, being in college and not working.
