I was talking with a guy that rides out of Derby VT and he told me that they average 160 to 180 miles per day.
I know you can do some big mile days in VT when the trails are great but those days are limited.
We average(enjoy) 80-90 miles a day and some times we could go further but other times you start to run out of daylight or the trails beat you up.
I think he is full of it, so i am wondering what a realistic average miles per day is for northern VT??
what is your average miles per day?

no problem doing 200 miles up north. Our best day this year is 267 on the trail by 7:30 home b4 dark.

I usually only get 50 to 60 miles in a day, but we drive on the slower side and we are in Danville and Walden where the trails are windier and not straight and fast.

Yup, 150 - 200 no sweat.
Ive done 100 miles in 3 hours riding pretty leisure, like on a good Sunday morning, 6am run.
Depends on the grooming really, but you can log some serious miles on groomed stuff.

Depends on how many people you are with. Every extra person adds extra time to get gas etc. 200 is real easy in VT. Most Ive ever done in VT in one day was 337 miles and that was this year, riding alone. Could of easily done it with 2-3 more people.

I only ride with my father, he's 57 and I'm 28
We are from western mass and ride out of derby all the time
Our average day is always around 250 miles.
Out at 8:00am, back at 6pm usually
Our short day is 200 miles
Our longest ride ever was over 400 miles in one day.
Because we travel 4 hours to get to derby, we try to get in as much trail time as possible
Also we ride pretty fast, but safe
through the woods 30-40 mph
fields 60-80
powerlines - wide open
lake - never less than 100mph
This weekend we did 260 miles on Saturday and 110 miles on a half day sunday
In case your wondering what sleds we ride, he has a 2004 viper and I have a 2001 XCR800

During the week, 200 is an easy ride (when your not worring about whos coming around that corner). I usally can do 120 loop in 2-3 hrs while the camp heats up. Best I've done is 375 in 24hrs in the NEK. weekends are a different story, 200+ is hard ride as the trails get beat up by the end of the day. I had to 2, 300+ days this year.

OK so if you start in IP where do you ride to to rack on 200 miles??

IP to Jay = 80 miles round trip
IP to Burke 90ish if you go the long way

I usually average around 200+ miles per day also up in the NEK. A guy I used to ride with would drag me out there at about 5am. We would do about 125-135 before breakfast and that again before lunch. God help me if he wanted to take the long way home which was another 80 miles usually. One April vacation week, we did over 2000 miles in a 8 day period. Let me tell you I was sick of the NEK by the end of the week though! Some of you from the NEK area knew who I'm talking about. He was referred to by some as Ski-Doo Pete. His pictures are still in the Chez Pigeon. He just loved being out on the sled, and didn't care if he road the same trails all year. He would do about 10,000 miles a year every year for about 25-30 years that he rode. He's kinda the Saquenay Bill of the NEK i guess.

jinx if you start in IP head out 105 west to GaderX territory(Derby) then take 58 to 5 south down past burke, maybe head all the way to St. Johnsbury and lunch at the Black Bear. From there you can catch the very beginning of the pipeline north to the powerlines up to maidstone and continue 98 into Bloomfield, cross the road into the Silvio Conte area up to Canaan then head west to 114 and back to the pond for a fast, flat and easy 250 miles!!!!!! Do loops not from IP to Canaan and back. The bigger the loop the better, that way its always different!!! Ive done this loop 4 or 5 times this year starting in Derby...

Timing has alot to do with it....weekdays vs weekends. At my age, I can still get 200+/daily pretty easy during the week riding during the day into early evening. I ride at night on the weekends just to avoid the crowds. Night riding in the IP, Norton, Canaan, Bloomfield area is awesome.

We usually ride around the 160-200 mile per day range,..leave at about 9AM, and we are back around dinner time, but many times we have done less, and many times have done more. My daily record was about 305 miles once back in 1999. Trail conditions have generally improved since the late 90's, and its very unusual to find a bumpy trail now, at least in the NEK, (I dont ride on weekends, only weekdays) so that kind of mileage is not only reasonable, but easily achievable!

First off I stay away from IP. Camp is located at the juction of 2-102 (the Balls) its an easy 80 miles N to Norton for breakfast then across 105 to Derby over into newport down to Burke and then back to camp. 12 hrs 250 miles. We bring along snacks and water and dont spend hrs having lunch. Have a nice dinner at camp, bed early and get up and do it all over again....
Oh, as for riding during the week, we may see 25 sleds the whole trip as were on the weekend you can meet 25 sleds a mile.

150 miles around here is easy... my wife or 11 year old grandson can manage it without excess speeds nor long days... if the trails are good. When I want to put some miles on ..start early leave b-4 9 ...short lunch...ride late..get back 5.6Pm.. 200>250 is a good trip

I've been lost on Winnipesaukee at night and its no fun, every inlet looks the same and has tracks leading into someones backyard. spent hours just trying to get off the lake, some short cut that turned out to be.
I've made that run from the mass border to errol and over to camp, good ride, when there's enough snow that is.

I hear ya on getten lost on Winnipesaukkee. A long time ago we got lost ou there, ended up knee's deep in water (thank god there was ice down below) After that headed for the nearest light, which happened to be some very nice people who brought us in to warm up and called the cops.
As for NEK Mileage, any is good. There's no limit. Just as long as you have fun. If you wanta ride a big mileage day plan for a midweek ride and go for it. This year I've done anywhere from 38 miles locally and 240 all day. I still get whipped after a high mileage day.

I have done a 260 and 280+ rides and a bunch of 150+ rides all year. I think the shortest was 65 last thursday at night and we were crankin, did it in 1.5hours. This was going from Washington to Orange to Groton the loop around Rickers Pond back to Orange, nice open trails. I wouldn't do that kind of pace durring the day though. Most of my rides were durring the week on a thursday or friday, a few on early morning weekends.

The absolute longest ride I have been on was over 400 miles
This was on my 1990 ski doo mach 1, beat that
Left at 8am, rode until 10pm
That was in 2002 with a 12 year old sled, If I had one of these new comfy sleds, by myself I could easily do 500-600 miles in 24 hours

This is my philosophy exactly. I've taken a newbie with me a couple times in the last few weeks and the main point that I made with him is that for me it is definitely the quality not the quantity of miles that I ride. Just being out on a beautiful winter day with friends, seeing the countryside from a perspective that you can't get from a car, stopping and having a cigar and bs'ing with the boys is what gets me from the end of one golf season to the start of the next. I'm really lucky in that I can do a 15 mile loop, a 25 mile loop, a 50 mile loop or as many miles as I want right from my front door. Some of my best rides this year have been some 30 - 40 milers with just me and my 4 year old son. On the other hand I took him on a 110 miler with some of the guys from my club and by the end of the day I was whipped and ready to head home and he was ready for more, despite falling asleep and hitting the kill switch about 4 times on the way home! Ah to have the energy of a 4 year old!

That's a perfect way to put it. I would rather do 100 quality miles rather than 200 just to say so!!! My personal best is 227 in a day and that could have been more if we didn't stop for a hour and a half lunch and visit to LL Cotes in Errol.
