The title pretty much says it. When I go to register a used snowmobile in North Dakota, will I have to pay sales tax? Does it matter if I buy from a private party, dealer, or auction? Does it matter if I buy it in-state or out-of-state? Do I need a bill of sale? Thanks for any responses.

Go to this link then select Buying A Vehicle in the blue panel on right side of screen.

Looks like "yes" is the answer to the tax question. I cannot find whether or not a bill of sale is required, though. I hope not.

Does the sled(s) already have a title? If so, I don't think you need a bill of sale, just be sure that the title(s) were signed over. If they are untitled, you will more than likely need the bill of sale. It's always nice to have one just incase.

Yes, you will have to pay sales tax. Hopefully they will not make you show the bill of sale to prove how much you paid for the sled(s). When I had registered my SnoPro, the lady asked how much I paid, we told her $2500, and we paid taxes on that much...didn't make us prove anything. The bill of sale stated I paid $3500, and I actually paid $5500. Cheat the system a little I guess...

Best of luck to ya JD.

Well, I ended up buying a couple sleds in Minnesota. Minnesota doesn't have titles for snowmobiles. I just got the registration cards, which is all they have. I got a bill of sale for one of them, which I'd rather not show the person at Motor Vehicle Division. But I forgot to get a bill of sale for the other one. I was planning to go over there today, so I guess I'll find out.

I went to the Motor Vehicle Division today. I have to have the seller sign a sheet that the MVD gave me. I think a bill of sale would have sufficed, but I didn't have that. I'm just not real excited about paying tax on something that has already been taxed.

Personally, I think ND has some stupid laws about titles, taxes, etc. Makes life a PITA sometimes...

Well, I got everything titled and registered. Only took 30 minutes. I felt sorry for the people in line behind me. Tax plus $40 in license and $13 in fees for each sled.
