Just had a cut a trip short because my sled started running poorly and sucking down a lot of fuel. When I looked under the hood, I noticed that both carb boots were completely split open. So, I need to replace them and would like to know if I should buy the OEM SkiDoo boots or is there something better that will hold up?
What makes these go? After I noticed they were split, I had about a 2mile slow ride back to the trailer(under 4k RPMS), do you think I did any additional damage?
How hard is it to replace these if you have never done it before? Is this something best left to a dealer?
Thanks in advance.

You're probably o.k. as far as damage is concerned. Have a look at your spark plugs to ensure you weren't too lean, and maybe do a compression check.
Put new boots on before you ride it at all. Must have split just from age and the weight of the carbs on there I guess.... pretty easy to change. Just make sure everything is well seated and tight.
I should check mine out too, and possibly install new ones as a matter of course.

From what I have discovered today, this is not a cheap fix as it will cost around $300+ in parts alone....then again, you have to pay to play. Everyone has pointed me towards the Boyesen Reed setup as it is more sturdy and far better then the OEM..granted you pay more for it, but it's better then having to re-do it every couple of years.

Since you changed over to the Boyesen Rad Valves, have you had the problem again? Are they holding up better?

After a lot of research I ended up buying a pair of Boyesen Rad Valves for a great deal on closeout. They should arrive in a few days at which time I will tackle putting them in and see what happens. Hopefully all will go well!!! If anyone has advice to lend regarding the install on this sled I am all ears.

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 01
THE BOOTS RIPPED BECUASE OF AGE, THEY DRY OUT AND CRACK. THERE IS ALSO A RUBBER SUPPORT THAT HOLDS THEM UP, MINE WAS RIPPED AND NOT DOING IT'S JOB.
I PUT V-FORCE 3 REEDS IN MINE, $269.00 AND INSTALLED MYSELF. TAKES A COUPLE OF HOURS AND CAN BE DONE WITHOUT ENGINE REMOVAL.
I GOT THE REEDS @ MCBPERFORMANCE.COM
