I was thinking of heading to the holland river for a ride.Is it safe this time of year I pulled off the 400 in my truck and took a little drive along the river to check it out.
Is it safe to run this time of year.?

how far a run is it to lake simcoe from the 400 highway.?

I have not been on the Holland this year as i have a trail pass but i drove by soldiers bay and saw plenty of tracks on it but i can not confirm any info on the canals. If you were to take the right branch of the river (the one halfway up the river that does not lead to soldiers bay) and follow the canals i wold imagine it being 20-35????ish miles to the 400 (and probably about the same on the other half of the loop) from the mouth of the holland. Sorry can not confirm on the distance as i don't remember form last year.

personally wouldn't ride the canal yet i'm an avid rider of the canal from weston rd.& 9 to simcoe and still haven't seen anybody else riding it yet. with our funny weather this year i don't think the canal will be rideable this year.

Just wanted to say ice is safe but it is not a safe ride for anyone that has never done it.Lots of low bridges and rinks like everyyear.Go slow or with somebody that knows it.

its been perfect the last 2 weekends from #9 all the way to the lake. no slush spots, and the pressure crack at the mouth of the rivers isnt bad. i was out last weekend and both days this weekend, all was good.
just remeber to stay to the right!

has anybody crossed kempenfelt bay. i was thinking about going from cooks bay up past kempenfelt to catch the rail way to orillia?
Fast Cat580
Im pretty sure kempenfelt is good.
a few friends live in innisfil on the lake , and i know they have been riding North of fox and snake islands. there are fish huts out there. Im not sure of the thickness that far north, but the guys from innisfil are fine with it.

I did notice 2 low bridges when I drove west along the river from the 400 is there many low bridges heading east from the 400 hwy.? and is the ice safe under these bridges.

anywhere to park my truck near the 400 hwy

I did hear last year a sledder was killed when he hit a bridge.

Was hoping to start at the river and take the lake to innisville to visit a friend Any idea on how long a ride that would be.?

Yep went Saturday from crates in keswick up to the 10th or 11th line. You should be fine if you know where you are going, ride safe& be careful

look for a little parking lot about 1km west of 400 on south side of 9...(it's small, no big rigs)...river is beside this parking lot, ride west on the river and turn right at first bridge under 9 heading North and under 400. If the lot is full you can ditch bang down from the 400 lot on the SW corner. It's not far to the river.

its about 45km to Alcona........I would suggest you return in daylight as you have a few forks in the river to navigate. Not a lot of snow on river or Simcow, I would guess its rough on the frozen slush spots.

many low bridges and yes the ice is safe, depending on sled and water level........not much room for tall windshields.........LOL
Fast Cat580
the bridges are low,

and for some reason this year the lowest one (duck bridge) is too low for anyones windshield to fit under. i guess the water froze high this year, becasue i usuallycan fit under it every year. also be careful around the pump houses around the bridges in bradford, and the house boats, because the pumps and bubblers keep the ice thin in those spots.
cheers

Best to either come down to soldiers bay - queensville sideroad - and unload there as there is parking and many there or go right into bradford and unload at the bridge. The river is mint but you need good carbides as snow is nto much on the ice whihc also causes low lube and engine will heat up more then normal. with more snow on the way it will be very good. always be carefull especially in the corners always keeping to your side as the river has seen its share of accidents. it is not a race track as many feel it is but you can open her up on many nice long straight aways.

Rode from Soldiers Bay, to Bradford, then over to Keswick and back on thursday, river was great, but corners icy .The huts have to be off by the 15th of march. The lake was a little rough in spots, drifts were very hard, keep speed down and no problems. Small pressure crack at mouth of river, easy to cross.
