A buddy and I just got back from riding the north shore trail. We started at the lot off of Woodland Ave and had lunch in Silverbay and turned around. We went 146 miles. Trails were in pretty good shape but were soft on the way back. They were very smooth and fast. There were 3 DNR officers radaring people at the railroad tracks just north of the two harbors parking lot. It is a 1/2 mile straight away up to the tracks and he was hiding behind the sign and jumped out and got me. It was the only time I really went above 50MPH and it cost me $182. I couldn't believe it was that much. First ticket on a sled in 12 years of driving. Just be aware of that straight away if you ride these trails. Other them the ticket it was a great day of riding. We will need snow soon though as some of the corners were starting to get brown.

I was fortunate enough to be warned about the DNR on Island Lake (north of Duluth) on Saturday. It's easy to exceed 50 MPH, especially on trails like you were on or on lakes, even if it doesn't make it right.

Without the warning I'm sure I would have received something from them.

I think that's the DNR's favorite spot to hang out. A couple years back they were pulling every other sled over and probably had 15 of 'em sitting there waiting for a ticket. We got lucky that day.

How fast do you have to be going to get a $182 ticket?

That was the price for 70 MPH or less. Anything over 70 MPH is considered reckless driving and was more. I was over 70 but he wrote it down to the 70 or less. I also found out that if you get 2 speeding tickets in a season or 1 reckless driving ticket you lose you safety certificate and have to retake the class before being allowed to sled again.

My kid got a ticket in the same spot about 8-9 years ago and it was $135 then. That is their favorite spot to sit on the NSST between Duluth and GM.

I try to avoid that stretch, but if I gotta go thru those straights (and several other places, too...), I always do 50 or even less. If I do go there, I make sure everyone I'm with knows they LOVE to sit on those straights, and from #3 and up a little ways especially.
