About 900 miles on this one, brand new crank from polaris.

At least the pto bearing didn't go bad.

Any idea why the crank broke? Was the crank runout excessive?

Man o man Al you must be ready to switch brands! You don't think bearing went tight for a split second if fit was a little tight. Heard of that happening then bearing cools and spins free.

Case fitment issue?

Well its not my sled.

My buddy with 4000 miles on his sled wanted to put a new crank in so he wouldn't have a problem.

So I put a new crank in for him, its only $200 more then rebuilding a crank from end to end, and thats what he wanted.

Case looked good at the time, not so good now.

His old crank is in another buddies sled that wasted the pto bearings, did not damage the case, put his old crank in it, 2500 miles later still running fine, 6500+ miles on crank.

I have no Idea.

Do new parts come with a warranty? That looks like it should be covered to me.

That is what I was thinking. Appearently the 800's are prone to the bearing to case tolerance wearing and then the crank does not run true. This overloads the crank and they can break. Very important to check crank run-out when replacing the crank and bearings (so I am told).

If that was my sled I probably would be ready to switch brands. The 800 libertys are know to have a few reliability issues although there are proven fixes available. My 700 Liberty is still running strong with 6K on it. Clutching is another issue although I think I have finally figured it out.

Even if you put a new crank in a case that was bad the runout would still be good. Crank sould be straight from the get-go, with no centrifigul force of spining, the run out would show good on a new crank just rotating it on the bench.

Problem is,

Artic cat is just to ugly.

Waiting to see if ski doo chassis at the fether light weight will hold up.

Yamaha, just has no idea how to build a rear suspension, and other reasons.

That is not what the crank shop told me. Poor fitting cases are a big problem with the 800 libertys which appearently results in broken cranks. A newly rebuilt crank in a bad case will not last.

Yup, learned my lesson the hard way (as usual), but lovin this thing now that it has a real suspension under it! ('07 now sporting a ProX rear w/dual clickers!)

Well my 02 800 had the crank lock up this year due to the PTO end problem. I sent the crank out and had it all repaired with new PTO end, wide bearing upgrade and new bearings. Case looked great and the crank shop that did my crank was not concerned about the case as long as it did not show signs of damage. No sign of wear on the case at all. Sled runs great now about 600 miles later. I am a bit concerned. I was wondering if I should find either a used case with no problems or buy a new case and put it in over the summer or should I just let it run? My plan is to keep this sled and eventually put a triple in it but I would like to get a couple more years out of it. Did you notice anything before it went? Excessive vibration or anything? Thanks
