(AP) Three separate snowmobile accidents across the state were reported within a 16-hour span, with two of the accidents involving sheriff's deputies. A total of six people were injured in the crashes.
Four people, including two children, were injured when two snowmobiles collided head-on in the Town of Hubbard about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
A 37-year-old Iron Ridge man was operating his snowmobile with his 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter when he crested a hill and crashed into a second snowmobile, according to Dodge County authorities. The second vehicle was operated by a 38-year-old Iron Ridge man, the only one of the four wearing a helmet.
The 37-year-old man and his daughter were airlifted to a hospital.
The names and medical conditions of the four were not released.
In Marathon County, a deputy suffered minor injuries earlier Saturday morning when he was run over by an intoxicated snowmobiler.
The sheriff's department had received a call about 3 a.m. of three men who were acting suspiciously at a bar and refusing to leave. When deputies responded, one of the suspects fled on a snowmobile.
The suspect, a 47-year-old man, crashed into the deputy. The deputy suffered bruises and cuts but was not taken to a hospital.
The man was taken into custody where he was held on tentative charges including battery to law enforcement and reckless injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
A third crash on Friday involved a Sawyer County sheriff's deputy, and left a Minnesota man with a broken leg.
Two squad cars were responding to a call of a domestic disturbance about 6:30 p.m., the sheriff's department said in a news release. As the cars approached Highway E, a snowmobile on a nearby trail swerved in front of the lead vehicle, the release said.
Deputy Brigette Kornbroke tried to avoid a collision but struck the snowmobile. Thomas Biehl, 50, of Mound, Minn., was ejected.
Biehl suffered a broken leg and was taken to a hospital. Kornbroke was checked and released from a hospital for a wrist injury.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in that crash, authorities said.
