Which needles are you using, the stock R1368G? SLP recommended the CCL needles for use with their twins, maybe an idea to try...? I'm sure Pockets has some good tips on this one.
I'd also get the SLP Power paks , they worked great atclearing up the low end response on my 99 xc700sp.

Had the sled for some time? My 700 runs a little rough on the bottom and always has. The phenomenon is exacerbated when cold. I think to some degree its the nature of the beast. A friend of mine blames the Kehins but I think you have Mikuni rounds?
I didnt think too much of it until I started riding my xcr8. Could always sell the xc and buy a big tripple if its really driving you nuts.
Ridin' again?

I also have a 98 XC700 and it has run a little rough on the bottom since new. Dealer has done a couple updates on carb parts and idle mixture setting from original, but nothing that made much difference. I have 6300 miles on it and it is all stock, but it does load up and stumble a little off the line if you let it idle for to long. Just get your R's up before you launch.

Another thought too. The Keihen carbs float level is set with the carb at a pretty steep angle, not verticle like a mikuni. A lot of guys make that mistake when going theough them It will cause it to starve for fuel at launch and if set off enough to run out at full throttle after a distance. I'd have to check my service manual for the specs if you need them. Let me know.
