I'm replacing the seal and bearings on the chaincase side driveshaft of an '02 500 XC. The bearings were in there so tight I had to tap (hammer) them out. Now when I try to put in the new bearings it's the same story. Are the bearings suppose to fit in the chaincase that tight or is it because I'm doing this in 20 degree weather? How are you suppose to install them. Tap them in with a wood block? Any help would be appreciated.

They fit tight, use a seal and bearing driver, you can buy them at any automotive store, or Farm & Fleet.

I had to replace the entire drive shaft because I hit something that bent the drive sprocket. The new drive shaft came with the speedo side bearing already installed so I figured I'd replace the chaincase side bearing at the same time. Side note: When I took the chain case cover off the head of the bolt and washer from the drive shaft just fell out into the belly pan. I wonder how long I was riding without that bolt holding the gear in place??? I added the extra washer that this site recommended. I can see why the bolt breaks. With the lower gear installed on the shaft, the drive shaft doesn't even reach the end of the gear. Seems like they need to make the drive shaft just a little bit longer.
