I've got an 01 Edge 600, HSP clutch kit, 420mains...
Had some issues with it last year with it dropping rpms while running over 6000rpms..took it down to the dealer and they replaced the coolant bottle because they thought that there was air in the system, causing it to go into a "retarded" mode..
Didn't have any problems last year after I got it back. Had it out last weekend, about 20* out on the river, no problems..
Took it out today, 30*, and it started doing it over again. It would rev up to around 8000rpms, then shut down and kick back on around 5000-6000rpms. Fuel Mileage was terrible also. Almost felt like there was some "surging" going on, it would take off and run hard, then shut down, then kick back up..
I'm thinking temp sensor might be bad???
Any thoughts?????

Ya try changing the temp sensor I had a similar problem with my 600 but I did't have the surging.

Temp sensor was a known problem on the 01's. (As was the coolant bottles)
The updated temp sensors should have a green?? band on the lead if I remember correctly.

01 temp sensors were known to be bad. The updated one should have a black band with a yellow stripe on it (at least mine did). Coolant bottles were issues on 02s, I thought?
Also, make sure you have a long snow flap. If you have a shortened/cut one, it won't kick snow up properly and won't cool as well.
Also, this sled loved 410 mains, all else stock, and running premium, non-oxy fuel.
I miss my 01, it pi$$ed off a lot of larger CC sleds!

I stand corrected on the colors. As for the coolant bottles warping, I thought it was both 01 and 02..?

Doesn't the temp light also come on when the sensor is the cause of the failure? It did when my dad's 700 acted up. Are the exhaust vlaves clean? What about the tiny port that feed the valve to open it. The hole step drilled so it can seem open but not go al the way through. Try to poke a wire all the way in. Any chance it is a clutch spring? I lost an epi cluth spring in 1000 miles on my 01 600 and it acted like this. It was the last thing I suspected because I consider hat a bit premature.

my temp light on my 01 600 would come as soon as you gave it some throttle and or wide open. but when it was idling it was off. I have noticed that if the trails are too hard or crusty your sled can over heat at lower speeds cause it's not kicking up enough snow to cool it if you are going to have that problem then you can put an extra cooler on your tunnel down the middle. I heard of people doing thats as well.

i jsut had the same problem. i changed every thing, it was not a sensor problem. i had a bolt come out in the stater. even though i checked the ohms it was grounding the sled out. i went thru every thing, unplugged every thing. it was a nightmare but that was the problem and it acted like what u said.

Usually when the temp sensor goes bad the light will come on. And it is also very obvious when it goes into "limp" mode. Damn thing barely moves and the motor "stutters". A quick way to check is to unplug the sensor and see if it runs the same.

We unplugged the sensor, and it will not run correctly...

Are the valves clean and the bellows in good shape? How about clutch center-to-center and offset? Broken motor mount? Drivetrain bearings? Clutch springs? How about rollers and pins in the primary clutch?

Haven't had a chance to inspect the above, but all of those are on the "To Do" List!!!
Looks like I'll have to ride the Pro X for a while

LIKE I METION ABOVE IT WAS THE STATER FOR ME. IF U UNPLUG THE TEMP SENSOR IT WILL GO IN RETARD MODE AND THE LIGHT WILL COME ON. U CAN CHECK THE THROTTLE SENSOR, UNPLUG IT, BUT IT LIKES TO IDLE HIGH. CHECK THE TIMMING WITH A TIMMING LIGHT TO. BUT I CAN ALMOST BET ITS THE STATER, ESPICALLY I WENT THROUGH EVERY SENSOR CHECK EVERY WIRE AND PLUG AND MY SLED DID THE SAME AS YOURS. START AT WHAT CREATES POWER FIRST THEN START CHECKING EVERY THING ELSE.
