i was riding in that area sat. morning about 8am. and DCNR had the road to lyman lake closed for an investagation. found out later that their was a man killed in that area, early in the morning. i heard a couple of stories of what happened, but i don't want to speculate, and post a false accusation.

Very sad to read this kind of story. Be safe, it can happen to any of us.

Thoughts and prayers to all his family and friends who must deal with this loss.

WOW - Hard to say what happened or how it happened, its tragic no matter what. Speed, alcohol, carelessness, over confidence, so many things out there its really scary. I hope nothing happens locally to any guys and gals hanging out at Walats (me included).

I read this and think of all the times I've slid a little more than I wanted to, come closer to a tree than I would have liked, or went way faster than I should have. Certaily does hit close to home.!

I just ran Emporium for the first time on Saturday and I'll tell ya. Some of those trails are flat out dangerous. When we were on top it wasn't so bad. In fact they were very similar to L.H. but coming up or going down the mountains were just nothing but straight up straight down and hair pin turns. The turns were icy and if you hit them to fast there were obviously no guard rails to stop your 100+ foot drop down over the side.

You hit it right on the head. Trails climbing or descending the mountain have a lot of steep switchbacks and the corners were VERY ICY under the snow. I'll be the first to admit I was running too hard a few times Saturday night on trails I'd never been on in my life. We ran Nelson Run back from Wharton like a bat outta hell and I assure you plenty of those turns had me questioning what the f@#& I was thinking once we stopped up top. I don't care what kinda skill you think you have there are hundreds of spots in those mountains that can punch your ticket in an instant. Traffic was heavy this weekend as well, and I saw first hand that the bars were making out quite well too. Easy to see after spending a weekend up there how guys/gals can and do get injured/killed. Anything from newest/biggest sled ego types, beer muscle types, rookies, once a year folks...you name it and it was out there all at once this weekend. Like Beamer said, you think about those times you slid a little farther than you expected, came into a corner hotter than you shoulda' etc. We had a safe trip, but I can think of several of those closer than preferred moments of my own from Saturday!

Anyway, this kinda hit me cause I was up there all weekend, rode that same trail, yet didn't hear about it till I got home. In retrospect all my own actions pop into my mind and I think about how easily it could have been me or anyone of us. This makes three PA riders in the last few weeks that I am aware of. Two right from my immediate area.

Talk about icy. My Crossfire is not picked yet and we were coming up out of Costello and there is one steep short hill you gotta climb to out of town.. It's right behind the bar. I didn't think it was to smart to try that run since the hill was solid ice and I didn't have any pick's in yet. But, I gave her hell and made it about 20 yards from the top and just started spinning. So, I thought, I'll just slide right back down the 100 yards. Nope! the guy I was with decided not to wait until I got to the top and he was 20 yards behind me sitting in the middle of the hill as I slid backward right into him.. I could have strangled him.. After chewing on him about letting me get to the top before he decided to follow me I took another trail to the left and went right up.. Shouldn't have even tried the first one without picks...

Sorry, didn't mean to hi-jack the thread.. you mention icy and well.. it was icy..

I'll tell ya, every sharp turn I went around I was on the outside or the inside and standing up stretching my neck to see around the corner as much as I could. We passed well over 100+ sleds.

Doug, I'll PM ya in the morning, but I bet we crossed the same paths at some point!

Amy had one of those "spinners" too, but that was just trying to get out of a driveway! SOLID ICE under that snow in many places.

Looking at the map I'm sure this guy knew the area-whats the statistic about accidents within 25 miles of the house.?

Quickest way to appreciate studs is ride a couple times without them.! Every sled I've bought 144 studs came home with it. Middle of summer and I'm in the garage picking. "traction control", nah - more like a $300 safety feature.

Agreed there.. I decided to take the sled and put the studs on later since we have had so little riding time this year. Although, I do ride with the understanding that I don't have the traction that I would normally have with studs.

Yeah, I have got to get her S studded till next season. I didn't figure we would be out much, but that isn't really a good excuse. I have to add protectors, 8 tooth drivers, re-gear plus the studs and backers. Too much $$$ right after we bought the sled and all her gear, but honestly what's more expensive? Would still be cheaper then replacing a waded up sled or an injured wife. Shame on me I guess.

In the newspaper article - it says he was riding a Kawasaki nitro 1000 - UMMMMMMM - I think I question how accurate the story is seeing as though the reporter doesn't even know that the sled he was on was a YAMAHA !
Sad loss just the same though.
Lets be careful out there.
I'm no longer a milage freak myself - I like to go slow and remember the scenery instead of the whole trip just being a white blur !!!!

Big Diesel
Never worry much about the traction thing regarding studs, I would never ride a sled with out them for the simple reason of being able to stop without slamming into the sled in front of you, if someone in our group is riding without them, you can bet your ass they are out in front.

I wonder how many rider's are wearing tek-vests. I noticed one at the three restaurant/bars we stopped at on Sat. That's my next purchase now that my Klim riding gear is complete.
