Full Version: Looking to do some upgrades to a 98 XLT Classic evolved chassis.

Had the wife's XLT out for a pretty decent ride this weekend, it's apparent it's going to need a little work to be a good sled for her.

First off, the stock track is no good. I can get a decent deal on a 1.25 studded ripsaw, in great shape...but I'm pretty sure a 1.25 in not going to fit under there. Can anybody tell me one way or the other? I was thinking that issue could be solved by going to 8 tooth drivers.

Second, the pull on the triple 38 roundslides was a bit too much for her on extended rides. I already bought a rack carb setup off a Triumph, should have been bolt and go, but it really wasn't. Both the oil pump cable and water line going to the head were in the way, could not get the rack on the carb flanges. I need another good half inch, maybe more, of space from the jugs to make these fit. Are there any carb flanges out there that are longer than stock, or are there any good machinists out there that could whip up some 1/2 inch thick aluminum spacers with the same cutout size as the carb flange?

I have a 1.25 with 1.450 studs in a '95, same tunnel/bulkhead as you have, so it should fit. I had to use shorter tunnel protectors though .500 vs. .750. I use 9T drivers, but with the track loose the studs get into the front exchanger. Tight track, this area is fine. It only contacts on sudden brake at high speed with a loose track. I wouldn't add the spacer in the carb boots, because that will add too much crank case volume, and make that motor even more boggy on the low end. You will have to raise engagement up to get past this, making it more difficult for her to control in technical situations. Look at rerouting the coolant and oil cable first. Don't rule out the "EASY" progressive throttle block as an option.

You'll need to find the carb flanges that go with the rack carbs. They are different than the ones for the round slides. Also the Triumph rack/oil pump uses a mechanical rod for the oil pump, not a cable. I would think
a cable would work though as the rack on the Xcr 800's uses a cable.

Also make sure those rack carbs have the black carb slides in them. I would even install them with the green ones in.

Can you elaborate on that? Thats something I may be interested in. I went from an EFI F7 back to the triple round slides and my thumb is feeling it. Thanks.

It was an option in the '90s. It is similar to ski doo's dual pivot progressive throttle that came on many models '90 through '02 I think. Polaris part # 5433343 (for 38mm rounds)

Wouldn't the spacers only add volume on a case reed motor, not on the piston port like the XLT's?

You're still moving the venturi farther from the transfer ports. Even though It has farther to go than a case reed motor your still adding length or volume. I guess the rack carbs must make up for it with their awesome response. Ok, I'll give you my blessing on the spacers, good luck.

Does the 98 XLT Limited have 38's?

I think the limited has 34's. The Special has 38's, good for about another 5HP. Wanna buy a set??

34mm to 38mm carbs are only about +2hp gain. The motors with the 38mm carbs have the cast version of SLP heads and different porting resulting in +7hp.

Would anyone happen to know what the part # is for the throttle lever itself, not just the block? My lever has the #543137 on it but it doesnt seem to show up anywhere, I guess its superseeded to another #? Thanks

From what I can tell it looks like the number is 2010119 with the heater. Thats from a 99 Classic Touring.
