Were heading out to the black hills this weekend and were new to riding out there and was wondering if anyone had some ideas on where to go to find some good offtrail/untouched areas for riding? any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Just got back Sunday. There is so much snow in the hiils that anywhere you go off trail you will be stuck if you arent careful. I rode offtrail on 3 and had a ball. Here is a for instance of how deep it is

we are heading out there on thursday thru the weekend. There are several spots along the trails that you can drop in and play. If you have never been there, the trip up Spearfish Canyon to to resort is worth the time. The canyon is a site, if your into that type of thing. From what i have been reading, even though there is alot of snow, watch out for rocks and stumps.

Where are you staying? leaving from?

here are some sites that maybe useful

It's worth the trip.

Were leaving friday at midnight from Gackle ND, we should pull in to spearfish around 7 or 8 we found a hotel in spearfish for very reasonably priced for us poor college students haha. there is only one short track in our group were ridding 144's and possibly a 151 so hopefully we don't get stuck too much... We are gonna try to make it down to trailshead as we have been told numerous times that is the place to be but w/ all the snow they have gotten it should be good riding anywhere. At least I know it's better than what we got around here so thats a major plus! If you see a group with either 2 or 3 summits possibly a RX 1 a zl 600 or a CF 7 don't be afraid to stop us and show us some of the sweet spots haha.
thanks for the help
samatt
We'll let you know about the sweet spots, after we trash them. We are working on hooking up with a local and he offered to take us out and show us some of the spots, should be sweet.

There will be 3 of us from Fargo, heading out on Thursday sometime. Staying at Trailshead this time, so should be interesting.

They got 10 - 12 inches yesterday and 2 feet roughly in the last week. we will have a 144, and 2-136, so nothing big, but talent must count for something? If we have any.

haha thanks i figured i would try and see if i could get anything outta you but o well. I think w/ all that snow it shouldn't be hard to find good riding.

Did you happen to go on the big run a while ago outta arthur? went on that this year pretty good time won 300 bucks. I must say tho riding up in the valley is sure boring compared to around where we normally ride. We actually have some hills and stuff to add some excitement unlike fargo area which is mostly flat ground.

As for the tallent i'd say it counts for alot i know a few guys that can ride a 121 in cooke city almost as good as guys w/ long tracks.

Most of our crew is up in fargo area, were leaving here friday after classes so you guys should leave some decent riding areas for us to get on and not rip them all up by saturday!! haha

Tell you what, we'll leave tracks for you to follow, I'll try to throw out a cookie or something every so often. Here's to hopeing we all find good snow.

We did not do the arthur run. My boss won $300 at the lake Park old timers run.

Riding around here is plain and simple boring. we do ride here when it's convienent for a quick ride. normally we head to east of DL for the trees. that is why when i get an opportunity to head to the Black Hills I am all over it. I am pretty confident the wife & I will be making at least 1 more trip out there this year.

We'll be at trailshead in one of the cabins. there will be an orange x-fire, blue edge RMK and my black IQ.

Bring the camera and have fun. First time I went I only got about 2 hours slee the night before, too excited about it. Night life in deadwood will be great, lots of people there for Pres weekend. Partied like rock stars.

haha cookeies eh, well if you see a black XF 700 thats stretched to a 144 w/ a bunch of skidoos i'll be the one on the cat so you can stop us and give us some grief on how ur group ripped everything up. As for the sleep it's still a few days till we leave and i wake up a few times a night hoping its morning just so i can get the day over and be closer to the time we leave!

I hope you guys have a good and safe trip this weekend.

Can't wait--more snow predicted today/tonite/tomorrow out there-got one of the F7/440 conversions finished up and ready last nite (orange one) and my 600 mod is almost ready to be loaded tonite--see you all there, here are 2 of the sleds in our group--

down to hours before departure time. just need to be able to get out of this little snow we got. I e-mailed with a groomer from there, he is going to show us some locations on the map. It's the govenors ride also this weekend, so things will be hopping on the trails, another reason to go back country. If we connet, i can show you some of the spots he marked on the map.

time for some half hearted work for a few hours.

What cabin you guys staying at by Rec Springs. We just stayed at one by there, SE of there and almost straight south of Deer Mountain.

just got back, all i can say, no matter how many hours you have to spend in the truck, IT IS WORTH IT. we only got in about 150 miles in the 2 days of riding, got stuck a bunch of times, met some nice trees and stumps. Sad part was when we left it was snowing again, I think they got about 4 - 6 inches last night thru this AM. I will post up pictures later. Hope everyone else had a good time.

The ridin is awesome we rode all day today and we are leaving tomorrow at about noon were gonns ride a while in the morning. We have hit about 20 stumps each day some times it sucks and sometimes it gives you extra traction haha. it snowed all day today again so were hoping for some good riding again.
samatt
Most all of our riding was done in about 15 miles of trailshead. 1 cat took out a part of his belly pan, 1/2 repair, another took out a trailing arm last night on the way back to the cabin. I got out with just a slightly burned belt.

this is one valley we hit 3+ feet of pure powder, no stumps, no other tracks.

roads were real fun coming back. we take 85 (i believe it is) North to ND interstate. Lots of blow over the road so they were icey. Interstate was not bad until somewhere between bismarck & jamestown.

If you get to trailshead ask for Bob the groomer. He showed us some locations to go.

have another good partial day of riding, some of us will be hard at work tomorrow.

the snow is awesome!! We met a logger yesterday that showed us a narrow trail up one of the hills and we got in to powder that after getting stuck was shoulder height and before we got to it was untouched. It was snowing all sunday night and the trails had alot of fresh powder. Definatly worth the trip up there.
All in all we had 1 bent tunnel and a trailing arm pushed back on one sled, one broken hood hinge on another, some bent a arms from a tree gap that wasn now quite wide enough..., and I sheered some bolts on my secondary clutch, for damages not so good but the pictures/footage we got and the awesome time it was well worth it.
your lucky you get to go back this weekend
