Full Version: 1996 Thundercat Top Speed

I am looking at a 1996 Thundercat that has ceramic coated pipes, stingers, k&n carb filters, 1 1/4 track, and jetted carbs for the stingers and a low windsheild. It has stock gearing and I am wondering what the top speed would be with, say 96-144 studs. What gains would I make if i shaved the track? thanx.

I have no idea, but my friend has one similar (97 t-cat, I have no idea how much work is actually done to it, and neither does he) that flat out rips. I have no idea what it runs up top but I know that last year, right after he bought it, he took it to the local radar run and posted high speed for the day @105mph @ 1000ft. No bullshittin here. The radar runs are this weekend but like a typical cat, it's broken so no defending the title this year. The last time we went riding, watched him pass me across a field and I have no idea how he was steering because as long as he was on the gas, his skis were 2" off the ground.

You go from a zr 440 to a thundercat?

I wouldn't think a 14 year old should be driving a Thunderkitty. dunno.gif
FreezerBurnt
Dude you are 14

thats a 175hp sled(with the mods noted)
Hager
my dad has a 1000 cc trail port t cat engine that was custom built my arnie shwemer from arnies cat house in 1994. It is in a 94 zr 440 chassis and it even has a zr 440 decal on the side. Ive riden that sled and went 107 mph in 800 ft, letting off about 70 feet from the gun, so i guess 107 in about 730ft. If ur not goin fast, ur not havin fun grinning-smiley-023.gif

id have to ride it and see, prob not, nitrous only works when u are goin all out and u hit the button, if it was a turbo'd 800 that was piped, then i think it wud be ok. How long is the track? whats the top speed?

hmmmm.....a twin piped 800, so twin turbos, very logical!! its a 162" track just like it says in my signature and its a mountain sled so i dont give a shit about top speed.

how come young people only care about top speed??? It could probably go 200mph with the right set-up and enough road....who cares

and it would probably take 1996 thundercat that your looking at to school without the nitrous

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure they quit making triple 2-strokes. Do you think there might be a reason for that? Who really cares about top speed now days though, if you did care about it you would buy a four stroke. I would rather be in the powder then on a lake racer or a trail ragger.

i would auctually like to try deep powder riding some day, only where i live theres a lake anyware you look, and there arent ay huge hills or mountians to go riding on, plus i dont have the money for a 4 stroke sled. And, they quit making triple sleds because all of a suden a shit load of gay men wanted to buy sleds, and they wanted to ride their faggot twin machines. So that is why they stoped making triples . faggs like that started buying faggy twins. and riding them in at faggy speeds. If your not goin fast, your not havin fun

Are you aware this is a non-bashing forum? That's reserved for the "general forum"

Wow Hagar!!! For a 14 year old you sure know alot about triples vs. twins...... The reason they stopped making triples couldn't possibly have anything to do with the wider power band and more torque the twins produce could it?? Nope that can't be it.... must be because there were (and I qoute) " a lot of gay men" Yeah you definately know your stuff.... good work. bigun2.gif

Besides man its all just good fun, do you really think that i would be hating anyone that has a twin sled? Like they are good sleds, its just that I like triples for the power and speed better. Like some of the motors that are being put out now days are pretty stout. Like the ZR 900 engien, or the F1000 stuff, like there's nothing bad about them, thats just my oponion on them. I auctuclly like some twins cuz of the better handling and because their lighter. But sience i ride mostly on the lakes, i never need a sled that has to pound through the twistie turns and fly 6 feet in the air off ditches.
arcticthunder
Stick with the tcat man - they are wicked fun, especially on lakes. mines an 02 with a 136 track, these heavy sleds actually do handle just as well a a twin ( if not better cause they have more weight over the skis) I have no prob out running my buddies with twins in the twisties, just takes more muscle to get em to do what you want. the 136 track does great off trail (not talking mtns here) with a wider ski up front. Once you start modding a tcat, its tough to find anything outta the box that will satisfy the hp addiction.

Ya i figured that out with my ZRT. Its really fast and it handles great. Only sience its a 96 the suspension aint too good. But on the top end it will scream to about 110 mph. Thats all it has even on the ice. But ya thats wy i want something with more spunk because the power is what im after. I dont do much trail riding very often so any older huge triple will get the job done. The only hard part is startin the freekin things when there cold, u really gottta pull hard. hahaha

Hey Mezz what part of the state are u from
lauriat
Hey Mezz. I know we ride different sleds, but the powder is the only way to go..... My little 600 sdi when new(the last time I tried to see how fast it would go) would go 109mph down the side of a road. I live in northern MI and don't get the snow you do, but 3-5' of snow is a blast when I ride in the UP. Someday the little kid will grow up and realize that speed isn't everything. Big twins, which i don't really have, is the way to go. More power and lighter, especially in the the powder!!!!
Hope to go out west sometime Mezz.

was going to say maturity plays a big role in it- age dosent matter (I know experience comes with age) but some forget to ever work on common sence- but now after further reading posts have my concerns.

Hager,
Sounds like you've been watching Smokey and the Bandit a little too much lately. Does your mother or father know you come onto this forum and stir up trouble? At 14 you should be dealing with Tonka Trucks and Erector Sets, you little brat. What kind of 14 your old has money to even fill the gas tank on a snowmobile? Too much money on your hands, kid. Learn to type, and more importantly learn to talk to strangers...in the street or on the internet.

At the rate you're going you'll be a highschool dropout working at McDonalds well into his 40's.

Dude don't listen to these old geezers. They thibk that because there parents fucked 20 years before yours that you must respect them. I was looking into old thundercats and actually would've bought one if I didn't get such a good deal on this ZR700. I know what you mean about open lakes and pinning it. Here in Minnesota we never get enough snow anymore to do any serious deep powder riding. Get the thundercat but make sure to follow the manual when syncronizing the carbs and tuning everything. My 1994 ZR700 is bone stock (except for DG stinger) and I adjusted everything according to the manual and was precise in my measurements. I got 93.23 mph in 1000 feet and I am 6'2" and weigh 235lbs! Me and my sled put together weigh 850lbs! thats a lot of weight going really fast!

Now all of you "older" guys are saying that young people are obsessed with speed, and that its not all about speed, But I bet that everyone of you wanted to go fast when you were younger.
