My dads 98 Trail Touring somehow lost all of its chaincase oil, so i took it apart and inspected it and only minor damage was the pins for the reverse. I am going to replace the seal and the pins, but the thing is, what kind of oil do you guys recommend? I will be ordering the parts from out of town so I am looking for something I can get locally.

I heard any light synthetic motor oil would work, but i would like some opinions on if i should go with some other types of gear oils.

Thanks

Used transmission oil in my Cat for years. No problems, but you need to change it more often. Lots of parts in that reverse kit so don't cheap out on it.

Problem is, I will not be able to get Polaris chaincase oil, my local polaris dealer is a crook, screwed me 1 too many times.

My dealer uses regular 5W-30 motor oil. I've used motor oil earlier, and when I changed oil last time I put in ATF. IMO, its more important that the oil is not full of water and metal shavings than what type is used.

I put in any kind of engine oil or atf that I have laying around.
