I need some pointers on how to set up my rear suspension. Basicly im about 6'1" and big - like 250lbs. My suspension is all stock except its extended to 144" and it bottoms out like crazy. The rear shock is leaking a tad, and needs to be replaced, what is a good shock to get? Will this solve my issue or should i be looking into stiffer springs?
If i pull all the way up on the sled so the track is off the ground, then set it down, the suspension stays quite high (where i would like it to stay), then if i push down it only comes about 1/2 way back up. Would this be because of the shock or is there more to it than that? Can you get a coil-over shock for the rear one to?

Thanks in advance guys.

Oh and does anyone know of a "hi-rise" seat for this thing? I hate the seat, it is so low, and the foam is so soft that you just sink even lower.

Please help me!!

So i guess everyone is in the same boat as me??

You need to go with heavier torsion springs the dealer should know which ones once you give them your weight.
If your shock is leaking at all it is junk and purchase a new one or go with a fox shock that is rebuildable also ask the dealer but the rear suspension in the 99 rmk is pretty much the same as the xc so you could probably get a used one off ebay. The only coil-over set up is to replace the whole suspension with fabcraft, holz,M-10 but your talking about 2 grand to do so.
The heavier springs will eliminate the sag problem.
Forgot to mention the seat- as far as i know the only thing you can do is but on a boss seat and replace the fuel tank to a 99 700 xc sp. You could put on a xc sp seat also with the tank.

Kool, i never knew that the tank from an xc would work, i had a 2000 xc and i liked the set up of the tank and seat alot better than this. ill have to check into that. And ya i gotta get a new shock.

Is the dealer the only place to get the heavier springs from?

I'd think the cooling system on the 99 makes it a little more involved to fit a XC tank + boss seat.
(BTW, I think Boss made seats to fit the 98/99, but not sure if they was started making the hi-rise seats back then...?)

as for the seat, I'd consider taking it to an upholsterer and get him to put on a couple " of extra foam in your seat. I did it myselv for the seat on my 02 xc800, added 3 layers of sleeping mat and cut off the bulky side pads, then stapled cover back on. Much nicer riding position , and the firmer foam is nice too.

As for rear shock setup, maybe you can move the rear scissor arm back one hole on the rails. This is supposed to make it stiffer. (Never tried it myself though)
BTW, got some kind of running board traction and handlebar rise? If not, those things is a very noticeable (and cheap) improvement in ergo's. Note that the stock steering post is a bit flimsy and will bend easily if you go crazy with the risers.

I'm sure you can get springs from someone else(like a junk yard) but they may not know which weight springs to put on and the last time i purchased heavier springs they were only around $85(from the dealer).

I was wrong about the seat in that the cooling system is different but a tank and a boss seat will still work ,if you can find one. I have also seen some guys put prox 440 race sled seats on their 99 rmk's but the cooling system is visible when you do that. You probably could make a seat from a 99 xc sp work you would just have to cut out the inside/bottom for the coolers it should not really hurt anything and you can probably pick-up a seat and tank at a junk yard for a couple hundred bucks.

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat, except I have a 151" track, and there is no other hole on the rail to move the rear arm back, at least on my rails...I got the heavier torson springs and tha fox shock, they helped some, but it still bottoms and is too soft...

Fox shocks from a 121 Xtra 10 will bolt right on the RMK rack.I just put a 136 RMK rack in my 99' XC and used the shocks outta the 121. Exact same length. I also have the fatboy springs and the thing rides awesome.Once in awhile you a really hard bump and it bottoms out. I've got the adjuster blocks on the lightest setting. You want it to bottom out on the really hard ones. This means you are using your suspension to its fullest. Do you have the front shock in the laydown position or upward?

You could do something like this. Expensive and time consuming, but effing sweet! (IMO)

can you tell us what you did with the cooling system? or is the diamond plate there to cover it up? where'd you get a tank to fit over the coolent lines???
XSKIER
Pictured is an 00 rmk chassis. Get the coolant tubes for a 00 or 01 that run on the edge of the tunnel and remove the tubes and exchangers that are there. The diamond plate is to cover up heavy stud damage. The tank and seat are from an 07 RMK and only have enough room to pass a wire for the brake light under. Fitting this tank also requires hood, dash, console, Steering post, steering stem, Air box, oil tank, and wiring modification. Other than that, it's a bolt on deal.

ah I see, its a 00... probley madefor an easyer swap to a newer style tank/seat. I'v been confusing myself with ideas on how to get a two peace tank/seat on my 99's.
instigator10
Get a seat off of a 98 XC 700. It has the one piece seat and tank. and it sits alot higher than the RMK seat.Depends on how you ride as to where you want you susp. set at.If you ride sitting down alot, then you want to turn your limiter blocks on the second setting If you have a tendency to stand alot then you'll want then all the way up. I have a set of fatboy springs that will fit that if really bottoms out bad. like new $100 shipped Just pm me
