I have a 95 XLT that runs great when it first starts up then after riding for just a few miles it begins to starve for gas. I can limp it back to where I started by choking it then running really slow. I experienced this a little bit last March and attributed it to a fault fuel pump so this winter I replaced the pump, replaced the fuel filter, checked the line in the tank and went through the carbs. Put it all back together, starts up in four pulls, runs great, good speed (70 mpg plus easy), then acts like it is starving for gas.
I may be answering my own question but, could the crank case be leaking when it gets warmed up causing a weak pulse for the fuel pump? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I like the sled and it runs like a champ otherwise. Finally it does have 4000 miles on it and I do not know if the engine has been rebuilt.

Check the fuel pump impulse hose, if it is soft, replace it. Also check the vent hose for the fuel tank. Make sure it is not pinched, or collapsed.

If the issue resides from the tank to the fuel pump would I not see fuel in my fuel filter? I have a clear filter just after the shut off valve and when the sled acts up I still see fuel in there and it is full. I will check the impulse line as I did not replace it when I went though the carbs.

If the vent line is plugged causing a vacuum to be pulled in the tank you would still see fuel in the filter, the pump just wouldn't have the pull to move it.
