We just picked up a 1995 ZRT 800. It had been garaged for a few years, so I flushed the tank, pulled/disassembled/cleaned the carbs, and put in a new set of plugs. The sled starts/runs well, but I need some guidance dialing it in. I contacted the pipe manufacturer today, and they will not give any jetting numbers, as the company has been bought/sold a few times, and they no longer have the specs for the pipes? The previous owner had 430 main jets in it, and the stock pilots. The microfiche shows 450's for main jets, so I started there. I have the e clips on the second to the bottom notch, just to be safe, and the air bleeds 3/4 of a turn out.
I warmed it up until I could feel heat to the rear cooler, and took it for a spin this morning. It is about 25 degrees F here in MN today. The sled pulls ok, but seems not quite as crisp as it should be. It has not been run for awhile, so I just put about 15 minutes in the woods and out in a field just to run it a bit. I pulled the plugs, and they look a little dark, but not completely carboned up or anything.
I put the plugs back in, and pinned it for a few short bursts. It is a tad lazy, but if I pump the throttle a few times, and then pin it, it pulls like crazy. It rpm's to about 8500-8600. I know what to look for as far as plug color, but really do not know how to properly check the piston wash. I am a pretty good wrench, so I can do just about anything with a little guidance.
Here are my questions: What rpm do these sleds make the best power at? If the plugs look ok, should I move the e clips up one slot and see if that cleans it up? How do I check piston wash properly--pull the plugs, turn the sled over by hand until the piston is at the top, look down the plug hole with a super bright flashlight? How long to I run the sled each time when checking the wash, and at what throttle?
I have not had the clutches apart yet, but the primary and secondary are the stock colors, so I do not think they have been tampered with.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
