I never fogged any of my sleds before but my buddys toasted a lower rod bearing last week. It had 6k on it , mechanic thinks it was rust from not fogging... How long can you store a sled without risking damage from not fogging it? I thought these new 32 dollar a gallon oils offered some amount of protection. Can you let one sit a month?, three months? Should you fog it only if it's going to set for six or more months? This may sound like a dumb question but i"ve never had a problem, I always fire up the sleds in the fall and let em run for a while on the stand. Iv'e ridden about 20,000 miles since 93. I usally only keep a sled 2 or 3 years because the chassis is beat , not the motor.

fogging the motor is one of the best things to do it coats the crank bearings and keeps them from rusting, just prolongs the life of the motor.

I just start mine once per month and let it run for about 10 minutes.
I do use stabil in fuel too.

I've fogged and I've not fogged. If you can start the engine every month, preferably twice a month, but once may be ok, you can get away without fogging. If you are going to let the sled sit from the end of winter to the beginning of the next winter, fog the engine. For the few minutes it takes, it is well worth it. Alway put stabil in the fuel and run the engine to get the stabil into the carbs. I cant tell you how many guys I know put the stabil in the fuel, but do not run the engine to get the treated fuel in the carbs and in the fall the fuel is nice and nasty in the carbs. The last 2 years I have been fogging with no troubles, but then again the previous 30 years I never fogged and never had any trouble either. Go figure!!

never have fogged mine, I stabil the gas (full tank, eliminates moisture)
and I run mine every 2-3 weeks up to temp, I've never had a problem and have owned both carbed and efi machines

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.........
All I ever do is park my sled in a barn put the track in air, turn fuel off, run it at idle till gas is out of carbs. Then I will go in once a month at least and turn fuel on start up and run for 10 mins turn gas back off and let gas run out of carbs. again. All I have in machine for gas when I store it is under 1/4 tank full. By the time winter comes around and sled comes out of barn for preseason I fill tank up with fresh new gas. I bought sled brand new and have not had a single problem, not even a fouled plug. I hear of sooooooo many ways to store sleds and I just decided to store sled this way and so far so good.

rs27,did your buddy store his sled outside by any chance? cuz if he did, the engine becomes a moisture trap as opposed to storing inside where the air tempeture is more stable.

Fog it! Stabil it! Mike D.

I block mine up, let the track sag like crazy, pour few ounces of oil down each cylinder and pull rope slowly couple times....put stabli/and dry gas in tank(even tho i drain it before the next season, and run it in my pickup or quad)...shut off fuel, run it til it starts to choke.stuff some rags in any holes rodents might find...put some moth balls in and around engine as well.. no problems yet... :div20:

I've always put stabil in then ran them till they were burning the stabil then close fuel valve and run out of gas. I would then put some two strok oil in the spark plug holes and pull over several times. I did this for 7-8 years. Starting last year I add one step. I fog to cover the lower half of the engine but do it after running it out of gas by having a partner shoot fog spray into carbs as I pull the cord. That seems like a good method to me.

Foggin is the best way to go. If you just start up your sled and not get it up to operating temps, all you are doing is setting up your motor for damage. Water is a by product of combustion and if the motor is not warmed up enough it will result in moisture in the engine which is obviously not good when the sled is going to sit for months.
