UPDATE: Friend arrested in TV anchor death
Sayner - A Chicago television anchor has died while snowmobiling in northern Wisconsin, his employer said Friday.

WBBM-TV said morning anchor Randy Salerno, 45, was killed Thursday night while snowmobiling with friends near Eagle River.

The driver of the snowmobile, Scott D. Hirschey, 44, of Crystal Lake, Ill., was cited for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated and arrested on a possible charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, the Vilas County Sheriff's Department said Friday afternoon.

The Vilas County district attorney will decide whether to file formal charges.

Salerno was riding on the back of a snowmobile when Hirschey missed a trail and struck a tree about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff's department said. Salerno was pronounced dead at the scene, and Hirschey was airlifted to an area hospital.

The Sheriff's Department said investigators believe alcohol and the speed of the snowmobile were factors in the crash.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden Tim Price, who investigated the crash, said a group of about six snowmobiles were traveling together when the accident happened.

Salerno had rented the snowmobile but was riding as a passenger because Hirschey's snowmobile wouldn't start after they stopped at a pub, he said. Price was told it was Salerno's first time snowmobiling after flying into the area that day.

"The driver asked the deceased if he could drive," he said. "They are best friends. From what I heard, they were best man at each other's wedding."

Hirschey suffered at least some broken ribs in the crash, he said.

Eleven people have been killed in snowmobile crashes in Wisconsin this winter, compared with four at the same time a year ago, said Bill Yearman, the DNR's recreational safety warden.

Last winter, 26 snowmobilers were killed.

Salerno was an Emmy-winning reporter. After 11 years at Chicago's WGN-TV as an anchor and reporter, he joined the CBS station in 2004. He lived in the northern Illinois community of Crystal Lake, where he grew up. He is survived by his wife and three children.

RIP,

but they need to drink after they ride!!!!

RIP RANDY.. He worked for my area in NY back in the Late 80's..

RIP Randy...

I grew up in Crystal Lake but never met him. He is reported as a class act guy. Very tragic. I really hate hearing sledders getting killed.

BTW, it was a Ski-Doo that he rented that broke down. When are these rental companies gonna learn to not rent that crap.
old cat man
Yes, what a bummer just watched the video clips online very sad, we used to watch them when down there and I still did when down there for work. Very very sad!
hyrczyk
Very tragic but maybe this will remind people not to drink and drive. Drinking and driving or driving with some one who was drinking is one of the stupidest things to do. I work as a paramedic and can not tell you how many times I have had to deal with situations like this.
Ronder
RIP Randy....

Mr Hirschey was formally charged Tuesday with homicide by intoxicated use of vehicle, according to Wisconsin court records. His initial appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11.

Bad judgement call on both parties. Liqoured up and driving a snowmobile do NOT MIx!

very sad for sure I was in IL this week for work and Randy's family DID NOT WANT HIM CHarged it sounds like the both messed up. And sad to see them make an example out of him but they have to do something, way too much drinking and driving IMO.
They just said on the news THREE times the legal limit, I hate to say it but how could the bar let them drive, not really up to them but someone could have tried to stop them from driving.

RIP Both families messed up now.

I was reading a couple articles about this throughout the week and of course they interview some numbnutz that boldly stated that snowmobiling and drinking are joined at the hip. Great reflection on our favorite winter activity.

It unfortunately happens way too often. A bunch of guys get together on a free pass weeknd with the boys and they think they automatically need to drink more than they would in a month of sundays in one weekend. A couple weeks ago we were on our way up and we stopped for gas. A motorhome with a four place trailer was also stopped there. 6 guys all stumbled out to go to the restroom, three had beer in their hands, all were drunk, at least the driver appeared to be sober. Last weekend we stopped in a bar while we were out. We were the only people in the entire bar that did not have an alcoholic beverage in our hands, everyone was on sleds.

Too bad that Wisconsin does not have dram shop laws that hold the bartenders, and bar owners responsible for overserving someone like they do here in Illinois.

This needless tragedy will now cause children in two families to grow up without Fathers. I know that the victims wife has said numerous times that it was an accident and she did not want the driver charged. The bad thing is that the State will make an example out of this person a rightly so. 3 times the legal limit is absolutely pathetic. An activity that can be great for the entire family has now ripped apart two because of someone's absolute stupidity.

My thoughts and prayers go out to both Families affected by this avoidable tragedy.

I just read another news update. The driver was almost three times the legal limit when he was finally tested over four hours after the accident.

Unbelievable !

The following statement is not meant to rip on any of our neighbors to the south or other out of area visitors, But!!!

So many times I see people acting obnoxious and drunk off their asses and doing obnoxious things and they usually end up getting into a car or truck with non-WI license plates or stickers from a car dealer out of the area on it or on a sled with a bright yellow sticker on the windshield. (I get extra cautiuos when I see a yellow stickered sled nearing me)

it seems as if the general attitude of the visitors to this area is that they treat it like the wild west because of our lack of overly oppressive laws and very few law enforcement personnel saturation like some states have. they seem to do many things up here that they would never ever even begin to think about doing back home just because they are "Up-North"!
I witnessed a vehicle roll-over accident this last summer with a mom letting her 13 year old son drive the Durango, I helped them get out of the car and asked what the hell she was thinking letting a 13 year old drive, her reply was "We're up north, we can get away with that around here!" Well, Not this time!! I stayed until the tribal Police showed up and told him what i saw and had the lady was calling me a liar, then she finally admitted to it and asked why I told the cop what happened. Unbelievable sometimes!!

it is sad that more people have lost family members to their own stupidity of drinking & operating a snowmobile and this behavior only makes it more difficult for the general public to look at us as responsible riders instead of a bunch of drunken idiots with a death wish.

But hey! were up north, Lets do it anyways!

I see this thread getting out of control quick.

Please start a new thread if you must do a IL vs. WI statement and respect the fact that Randy passed away, regardless of the circumstances.

Exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've been forced off trail due to sleds with the "Big Yellow Stickers" coming around the corner WIDE and like a bat out of hell.

BINGO. People need to be held ACCOUNTABLE for their actions. Three times the legal limit is flat out REDICULOUS.

The REAL FACTS may surprise you.....Less than 10% of the fatalities during the 06/07 & so far during the 07/08 seasons are from ILLINOYZ.....While 80+% of the fatalities over the same time span are WISCONSINITES....Even HIGHER percentages of ALCOHOL related deaths are again WISCONSINITES....Seems to me the problem is more HOMEGROWN...........................

Yeah sure, we believe that you do not want to make this a local/out of area thing. Yeah, and you were quiting snowmobiling and selling all your stuff. You flip flop more than a desperate politician two days before an election.

If you look at the deaths from the last three years it was the locals with the highest percentage of death related accidents with a BAC above the legal limit. So until you and everyone else is willing to admit that this is a snowmobiling problem, and not just those from out of state/area problem, it will always be just that, A PROBLEM !

It is a huge problem fueled by the fact that when you travel you have to stop at a bar along the trail for a warm up, drink, snack, or to just go to the bathroom. You would never stop at a bar while you travel in your car for any distance, or period of time, but we have to when we are snowmobiling. And when in rome.......... Some people get looser when they are up north on vacation, and the locals, it is one of the few things to do for any form of social entertainment. Add a snowmobile with a high BAC, and 100 plus HP, and the consequences are usually not good.

You people can yap all you want about those yellow stickers coming at you, but until we do whatever we can to curb the problem of excessive drinking and snowmobiling, nothing will change the perception the general public has about this winter activity. So, until the AWSC starts to clue in the membership, the tavern league is held responsible for overserving, until law enforcement has the tools to really make a statement and put up an enforcement task force with some teeth, and last but not least, as snowmobilers we need to change our behavior when we are out on the trails and STOP drinking while we are riding.

Unfortunately for those of us whole ride and act responsibly while we are on snowmobiles are going to be further limited with more laws that will further restrict what, how, and when we can ride. We are unfortunately in a very small minority, and the majority will cause these further limitations. It is also a ssad fact that there is not enough money for law enforcement to actively target drinking and snowmobiles, until this changes the problems will continue too.

Ride safe

spot
at least they didnt take out a family riding with kids.........

wait until you put the sleds away for the night before you open the first beer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are having a special report tonight on the station that Randy Salerno was an anchor about the culture of snowmobiling. I just hope that it does not turn into a snowmobile bashing piece that further reduces the public perception of our activity even lower. Even in one of the newspaper articles, one quote came from a person who made some wisecrack about "that's what we do, drink and ride". Just what we need is some idiot speaking for us all with a beer in their hands at some pub up north getting their 15 minutes.

I am sure that the piece will be available on their website after it airs tonight at 10 PM. www.cbs2chicago.com

Well they did it. They portrayed us snowmobilers out to be nothing but a bunch of drunks. They went under cover in a bunch of bars in Sayner, Minoqua, Tomahawk and a couple others where the bartenders were doing shots with the patrons AFTER last call! But what was really funny, their under cover camera only got shots of guys wearing snowmobile bibs.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but dosen't Northern Wisconsin have a curfew for sleds like certain towns in Michigan does? Channel 2 also made a comment that they tried to call 911 and the Police said they "didn't have an officer in the area"? Great, now the DNR is going to be sitting outside of every bar stopping everyone as they come out, day or night checking to see if you've been drinking even if you just go in to warm up or get something to eat which is what I do nine times out of ten because I ride with my wife and son in tow.

There is a time and a place for drinking, just not on a sled putting me and my family in jeopardy when we're out for an enjoyable time.

Sorry for the rant and i'm not preaching, but Channel 2 just pissed me off!

No, no curfew on sleds. Our news had a stat that basically 2/3rds or more of accidents on sleds were alcohol related. If we don't do a better job policing ourselves, someone else will.
