OK, so I know nothing about computers except email and browsing the web. Until now, all I've used is my Dell desktop. However, I travel a lot and need a laptop. I have the opportunity to buy a used Dell laptop for $175 from my girlfriend's work (accountant's). This laptop has never been used with wireless internet, so what do I all need to get started? Will it still be a good deal?

Depends if the laptop has wireless built in or not. Assuming windows go to my computer right click -> manage -> device manager -> network adaptors -> look for something "wireless". If its built in you will just need to find a signal and possibly configure your laptop to connect. (not real easy to explain on here with out more details) If you dont have it built in you will need to get a wireless adaptor to plug in (usually in a PCMCIA or USB slot) After you get connected the security issues come into play with wireless too. Personal email and such shouldnt be much of a problem but i personally wont do online banking on wireless.

Guess I'll have to get the wireless adapter. Thanks.

What kind of wireless are you looking for? Do you only want to be able to access hot spots or do you want to be able to access the internet from anywhere?

There are 2 types of wireless - one would be generic wifi where you can connect to any typical open wireless network. The other would be wifi provided by a cell provider. You can get a card (or use a phone that has data - blackberry, treo..etc) and access the internet anywhere you have a cell signal.
