I would not say its bad place to live, but it is a big city and it does have big city probs just like any other big city. Sledding you have many options head east hour and a half and you are close too the Coquihalla number 5 highway, number 3 highway will take you to sunshine valley little farther and you are in manning park few good areas out there. and you can take the number 1 highway and ride out by boston bar. Or you can go up the Sea to sky highway and ride brom, brandywine, rutherford creek those areas are about 2 hour drive rutherford being the longest drive at 3hours. And you can go into the U.S and ride mount baker about 4 hour drive, same with Revy 4 hour drive east inland. So many many places to ride out here.

Surrey has some nice areas, as well as some not so nice areas, just like any other big city, just stay away from the walley area, and as well the areas that have the skytrain stations, I think are getting a little run down, try to get something more on the outskirts, langley cloverdale area if you can or more towards white rock, it is nice, but not cheap! As for the riding you should be more than happy, some of the best riding in the world is all within 4 hours drive or less.

i spent the week in surrey and in west vancouver, i drove to whistler and saw lots of sleds on the back of trucks on the way there and back, are there many ''free'' places to ride along the 99 highway?

Its all free, I have never had to pay to use the trails around Vancouver, although I have certainly donated, but was never forced to pay anything, sometimes there is a parking lot fee, but usually its minimal.
