Anyone know if these trails will be open for the weekend or why they are closed now, looking to go check on the cottage and make a nice loop from Kearney down the D101B! anyone been on the D101B?
thanks in advance
DaveVmax700
apparently they are running the trails with the groomers and getting them ready for the weekend

I have been on the D101B twice this season.

3 weekends ago I rode the 78/79 to the D101B and up into Kearney, came home on the D102B to Baysville.

Last weekend I rode the D102B to the D101B and then rode it south down into Dwight. It was good - considering the new snow had just arrived. I also know that last Saturday the D101B had been groomed from Dorset to the Oxtongue shelter.

There have been some complaints of little progress on the Tall Pines secondary trails. So - no idea on 64-65. Guys have been saying that 64 south of Kawagama looks like it has not been touched this year. Not sure if they are still plowing the first section on the 65 on the north side of Kawagama. Also - not sure about coming across Kawagama on the 64.

It sure would be nice if they got them open. I would like to think that the $180.00 I give Tall Pines would get me more than two trails.

Perhaps you have good reason to be disappointed with Tall Pines. But I am sure you know - they do not keep all the $180. And, you get access to ALL the OFSC trails for that money.

IMO - the days are gone that we ride the trails of one club primarily. If Tall Pines drops the ball you can be out of their trail system in about half an hour. Lots of hard work being done by the neighbouring clubs.

This weekend should be MINT and I only wish I could go!
RavenGuy

The MSR trail conditions site shows Tall Pines opened trail # 60, so it appears they are starting to groom.
Apparently, as stated in my earlier rant, all their groomers where busted and just got running last weekend.

Raven is safe to run ( 6 inches good ice last weekend, was ice fishing ) but I wouldn't bet that they'll have 64 groomed by this weekend.

x2 on the TP trail pass money, frustrating for sure this year.

Damn i may just run the road/trail in anyway, my cottage is just after the bridge over Bear lake

Folks, let's all take a deep breath here. The clubs have been working as hard as they can to open or reopen the trails. Trail 65 is now open from the Oxtongue Shelter north to Troutspawn. As I write this Algonquin SC groomer is working his way to Troutspawn Lake and back. This trail sustained major damage in the storm last week and there was a large washout that needed to be packed and filled. This is the last trail that we needed to reopen after the meltdown so we are now completely open.

On another point, please, stop complaining unless you have been out on the trails and see for yourselves what the conditions are, it is frustrating to read post after post by members who have not been out in the past couple of days. This time of the season the trail conditions change by the hour as we get the groomers through the system. If everyone used the negative energy wasted by giving the clubs a bad rap and channelled it into helping out, just think what the trails would be like. If you can strap a saw on the back of a sled for your ride and see any trees in the way, take a minute cut it up so we can push it out of the way the next time we groom. This saves the groomer operators hours that are better spent going forward instead of idling while they do the cutting.

Tall Pines is also hard at it and both their groomers are on the trail right NOW!! This is information hot off the trails! Good on them after all the early season issues they have encountered. luxhello.gif

Trails that feed into a lake usually will not be groomed until the the ice is deemeed safe. Just because there is a track on the snow does not mean it is good to go, there is always someone who wants to be first.

Things are looking good for the weekend and if you see a volunteer on the trails either say Thanks or ask us how you can help make the trails better.

Cheers and see you on the trails.

I can verify that, I just talked to Captain Jim and was grooming with the tunes cranked and said things should be great for this weekend.

From what I recall from last year the conditions are better now than last year at this time.

Give the clubs a chance, the meltdown was a big set back. Broken groomers don't help either.

Greetings, a few of us are heading up to Ox Narrows Lodge tomorrow. Was wondering what the ice conditions were on Kushog, St Nora's, Sherborne, Big Hawk, Little Hawk, Cat, Kennisis, Little Redstone, Big Redstone...if you have any info you could provide on any or all of these lakes, it would be much appreciated.
Cheers!
killer
people are running them.. I have some other lakes and they seem fine. not sure how safe they really are though as the changing water levels really screwed things up. places that are normally frozen aren't, while other spots are that are usually open... weird. there is lots of ice like 12" in spots but like I said some normally frozen areas are real thin or open.

the big lakes will not be staked I can tell you that and you dont want to break down out there... this cold will help and people will undoubtedly be out there this weekend.

mid Jan is normally a good start for the lakes - we're about a week behind IMO.

9:00 PM Just got in from grooming and checking the trails. All Algonquin open, All Highland Rovers open except for trail 95.
North of Kearny the Almaguin club has the new Groomer broken down again in the Bush and Logging near Sand Lake, the D trail not so good, north of Kearney.
Tall Pines, All trails north of Kawagama open and groomed and D101B Groomed to Shoe Lake. Trail 64 only 2 more bridges to go, Trail 16 from HCSC to B trail groomed today.Oxtongue Lake is staked Lake of Bays tested today only 4 inches of white ice in some of the traffic areas.NOT GOOD. Kawagama North end just froze monday not good. There would appear to be a lot of slush coming up on many of the smaller lakes with the weight of the new snow and the water levels dropping causing the ice to crack as it settles in the hollow areas. The trails that are groomed are fabulous, and no one is around.

Awesome info!

Can you provide any further info on the logging around Sand Lake?? Usually loop north around Sand Lake and come back into the back of the Fetterley garage in Kearney. I love those secondary trails.

Thanks again!

RR You can get to sand Lake but road is plowed and trail to the caves has not been open yet because lake is a slush pile. The Almaguin Club paid big bucks for that new Prinoth groomer and I understand it has been a bit of a bear with break downs. Pretty dishartening for the volunteers that thought they were moving in the right direction to better the trail system.

I got a call from Slider to say that trail 68 was groomed (double wide) south from Kawagma Lake. The dumb a$$ was "walking" so has no idea if its groomed all the way back to trail 64 from Kawagama Lake. tongue.gif

He may venture out tomorrow (on a sled) and verify our assumption.

If anyone else can confirm this please post your findings.

Thanks

trail 64 has not been touched. We broke powder from 68-64 to Raven and no one else have gone through. One bridge is done and the other one still has been touched. Very tricky trying to cross

Just heard from my buddy who was up last weekend.

Trail 61 ( north end of Raven to D101B ) was groomed, but again the MSR site says closed.
Trail 64 not groomed.
D101B dorset to Dwight OK.

So it appears Tall Pines is out working their trials.
Hope it's all done by Feb 8, my next available weekend. beer_cheers.gif
