Hi guys! I have always been a yamaha guy but i love the polaris iq 440. I currently own a 2003 yamaha viper with 1600 miles no electric start or reverse and completely stock. I can buy i 2005 polaris IQ 440 for $500 plus the trade of my viper. The polaris has been trail converted, with a 10 gal tank and different domes. other than that i dont know what else has ben done for the trail conversion. The polaris has a white painted hood and white c&a skis, white hand guards and a bar riser. What i have heard is that this motor is not that reliable for a trail conversion. Can you guys help me out and tell me what you all think?

id jump and leap on it. the iq is a great sled and youll never go bakc to a yamaha or consumer sled ever again. race sleds are the way to go. as for the reliblity of the motor, yes its not like a pull and go 600 but not to bad. for next year carl cyle makes a bolt on 600 or 660 kits for that 440 motor, that will give you way more kick and it suddently a reliable pull and go motor. will cost about 2000 to do the conversion though.

IQ's are badass. 1luvu.gif

no motor swap needed just a modded 440 eninge. you need a pipe, carbs, and a few more like things though after this kit. here is the link.

I have a couple hundred trail miles on mine already and I have a 05 iq that has been trail converted, you just have to watch your jetting a little more and be carefull on the fuel you buy. I run 28 to 1 ipone oil in mine and stick to a good premium gas (phillips, bp, etc)

anyone else have an opinion. how hard is it to convert to oil injection and how much $$$ would that run be. is the case mod just as effective as installing oil injection

So would this be better than a 600 conversion, say if someone could get a 600 with electricals, carbs, valves, (all fresh) for say 1700.00. Still need mounts, pipe and injection bottle. Im sure there is more misc on the conversion also..

I think thats a better way to go, then you have a complete 440 engine to sell off when you're done too. Much more cost effective IMHO. Another way to go on the cheap is a 600VES, they pretty much bolt in with a few spacers and you can pick a decent one on ebay for around $800-$1000, and you have a complete 440 to sell which seem to go for 6-900. If I ever get into trail riding an IQ it most likely wont be with a 440.

You will need to pull the motor to bolt the oil pump on, and then add a oil bottle and route the lines and you need a new trottle cable for the oil pump and jets from 290 to 320 depending on temp, and needles from a 01 440 and get the timing set right, this is with the trail kit. I use a quart of oil per 8 gallons of gas which comes out to be 32/1 ratio and I have around 600 miles on the sled and no problems and I run the trails with 600's all day, the lakes are another story, but you do the above and you will have no problems, one thing you will have to do is route the oil line that would go to the PTO side back to the bottle, that is a sealed bearing and does not need oil.
Good Luck

Well sleder700trp, this is a touchy subject with me. I have an '05 and I absolutely love it but I had problems in the beginning and it cost me some coin to get it right. I completed all of the recommended trail mods to include oil injection and my 440 locked up 30 miles into my first trip. I have since dropped in a new 600 HO and the thing is just awesome. The Racers had some crank bearing failures in '04 and in '05 that have to be addressed. I addressed mine with oil injection but the damage may have been done before I added it because it still failed. I did not complete the case mod because the consensus was it was not needed with oil injection. Alot of riders have had good success with these mods though...just not me.

As far as putting a 600 kit on top of your 440 cases, that's a cheap way to add HP but you still have the crank bearing problem that needs to be addressed. Personally, I think it helps to gear it for the trail too. The stock race gears are only good for about 75 mph and if you run wide sweeping trails where you are trying to keep up with you buddies well, that's how I lost my lower end. I now have a gear set good for about 100 (and the consumer 600 HO) and I can keep up (lead, actually) without running WOT all the time.

If you don't trail it much and just ditch bang, you are probably good to go with just the case mod and pre-mix or oil injection. You just have to ask yourself, "what kind of rider am I?"

If you find that you trail ride a lot at high speeds, this sled can work (and be a blast by the way) but it will take some modding.

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the clarification! Can you blame Sledder700tpr for trading up? i would much rather try and sell an IQ than an old Yamidog. Craig

well the sled is forsale as all my sleds are for sale! i do like the sled though.im kind of torn on what to do with it. and don't bash on yahaha's. I like all sleds unless its a cat. I have ridin yamis all my life and they are extreamly reliable, and i heard their coming out with some tubos in there sleds next year. doos also make a nice sled but those cats are always breaking down. as for the iq i have a few liitle bugs im trying to work out, but its a fun sled, no doubt. if i don't sell it this season, im definatly going to invest some money in the sled and get it set up perfect over the summer
