from the DNR site

Noise limit—for every snowmobile manufactured on or after
July 2, 1975, the noice level standard for exhaust and engine
noise shall be 88 decibels as measured in accordance with
the procedures established for the measurement of exhaust
sound levels of stationary snowmobiles in the January 2004
Society of Automotive Engineers Standards J2567.

To help stay compliant, do not alter your exhaust to be
louder than the original exhaust system. If your snowmobile
sounds louder than normal, you may be in violation. Maintain
your snowmobile and seek the advice of a service technician
if you are in doubt.
You cannot modify your snowmobile’s exhaust in any manner that
will amplify or increase the total noise emission above that emitted
by the snowmobile as originally manufactured, regardless of date of
manufacture.

I think the bold says it all

I had a snowstuff on my zr800. Damn thing gave me a headach from the sound. Stay stock or at least do not go above the limit. DNR are just waiting for sleds like that. It helps support our state.

I just put a rumble pack on my 2000 zr6.. i think it's louder than stock but it would be controlable if need be. I've never ridden in WI but am planning on going soon. When the DNR pulls you over and looks under the hood.. are they going to ticket you for a modified exhaust or test the decibal level?? i could arue all day long that my stock can was louder.. sounds arbitrary to me... what are the thoughts of those of you who have been stopped... (and please don't even respond if you're gonna say take off the can.. i want real responses)

Me and some friends got tickets there a few years ago....they had us park in fucking parking lot that was half bare tar half ice and surrounded by buildings....then checked us with a decibel meter. Very nice of the jerk to do that in those condtions which are not normal at all for a sled, so the sound bounced around alot more and made it seem louder, out on the trail we woulda all been fine i gauruntee it.

Now with the 88db law that they have a stock can that has burnt out packing would be to loud, IMO its fuckin stupid. I can see not wanting rediculously loud sleds running around, like straight pipe or something, but if a guy cant even run a can i think thats stupid. At least them stupid harleys can run around in the summer with 8" of exhaust pipe and not be bothered that much.

From what I have read from legit sources there is a good chance your stock can was too loud for this make and model but you would not get a ticket as long as it is stock based on a visual inspection. Basically what I am trying to tell you is that if your rumble pack is louder than stock or even as loud as tock there is a good chance it wont pass DNR test procedure and you will get tested if you get stopped and it does not look stock.

I would just pop the can off everytime i go up north but it was such a pain in the a55 to install. I had to do rivet work on the belly pan.. not even sure if it will fit with the current setup i have. Took like 2 hours to put the can on.
