I'm looking to buy a pro x and wondering about the issues with 600, 700, and 800. Which is the better buy. Trying to get more informed. I like top end speed and power, but reliability is more important. I have the 800 edge x, but worried about it going on me. Or should I not even be worried, and just put 1.25 and better shocks and seat on what I have?

you can never get a edge sled to do what a stock prox can do and take a betting every use . The two most bullet proof prox sleds are the 600 and 700 then 800 really only has issue with the crank and exhaust valves and those are very few. There is a few things that need improved on with all of these sleds like clutching , motor mounts , jetting but basic tuneing these sleds ROCK . A good rider on a 2001~2004 set up prox can still school almost any sled on a bumpy bombed out nast trail , but we are never going to win a top speed war. The edge give the same motor as a prox will beat it every time from 70+ mph , it just fact the prox skid eats power more then most. Same as a GEN II give the same motor will win every time but throw some bumps and twisty trails in the mix and the prox comes out on top.

No kidding these sleds do rock! ,my son started out with an 04 Pro x 550 he put 9500 miles on it, and laid a beating on my buddies once the trail got nasty.Last year we purchased an 04 800 Prox,it's been bulletproof did a little cluctching and gearing ,jetting . Now he lays a beatting on all my buddies regardless what they drive.
I dare not attemp following him with my new Switchback 700,the iq is great but i'm not that confident yet on it,The prox's are like gocarts in the corners and will take the pounding of the roughest trail.

Oh yeah put SS VALVES IN THE 800.
i think the PRO X would be a great buy. We kept the 04 550 PROx for my 12 year old daughter.

Any PROX ,550,600,700,800,BULLETPROOF ,my 2 cents.

Good luck!

Get the 700 if you want both power and reliability!!! Like most sleds----routine maintence keeps alot of problems away. I have started to go through my sleds every 500 miles. Check exhaust valves, suspension bolts, track tension, chain oil and tension etc. put 1500 miles on my 700 since I bought it(it has 4400 total) and the only problem I had was the crankshaft going on me and I caught that during pre-winter inspection. But buy one and you will be a believer!!! My buddies let me go first when we come to a trail that has'nt seen the bottom of the groomer on about two weeks!!! this sled gives you confidence!!! Get one and hammer down!!!

the 550 is no speed freek but it will take a pounding and of all the prox sleds the 550 has the cheaper shocks.... so if that sled throws a wooping on a pack of buds guess what a big motor will do!

Exactly! top speed for the 550 was 75 mph,it knew only two speeds idle and wide open, lots of torque though for a fan. Now that he rides the 800 Pro X He smokes us on any trail once it becomes technical.
I can tell you it's a great jump sled also, always lands flat no suprises.

The 04'S seem reliable the 700 and 800 have DET, can be helpful.
Iowa pro xr 800
I have 800 xr and like it brtter every time i ride it. Also a pro x you will find the faster and harder you ride the smoother it rides.

Well I guess I'll be the one to give ya food for thought. I own a 02 xc800sp & 04 pro x 700 & latest is a 06 Fusion 700. The edge has a more comfortable ride & at close to 9k on the odometer with 1 rebuild, it still blows the pro x 7 away. The Pro x has issues with motor mounts ( gota put in my 3rd set now). On my 2nd motor cuz the crank shaft broke off with the clutch (warranty item). Also am on a new rear skid for the Pro x cuz a set of hyfax didn't last for crap & I ate up the rails. The edge I have is a Great trail sled at any speed. The Pro x is more for ditch bangin & ruff stuff/ not geared for speed. None of my sleds are box stock. That being said, IMO you'd be farther ahead to tweak what ya have than to buy someone elses used headache. Why not look to a Fusion/ IQ if you're brand loyal. I didn't like the Fusion at first & kept going back to the edge for awhile, but at close to 1500 miles it is really starting to impress me. Once you get over a lil issue with vibes at low speeds, it handles anything you can toss at it.There's some good deals on new carry overs out there... Getting to old to tinker, just wana ride! Good luck on your outcome.

Polstar has a point on the motor mounts. they do have a tendency to break on the front PTO side. However most of us just put in a good torque link to keep the engine from moving and they are set!! Polstar also has a good point with the fact that they are no speed monster!! They are truely a mogul pounding machine!! However---in my opinion, the edge sled compared to the Pro X feels like you are riding a wet noodle!! No comparison!! And just my personal opinion------I would not touch a fusion sled with a ten foot poll!! But to each his own!! MY TRUE RECOMMENDATION-----PRO X or if you can afford it---DRAGON

Pro X or XC......If you want to cruise trails and get a smoother ride on the small stuff then keep with an XC...if you want to rock and bang around and have a ton of fun, then go to the Pro X. Motor mounts are a non issue if you have the engine held in place with push arm and torque link set up correctly. The Pro X chassis is stiffer and will take poundings for 1000's of miles! XC chassis feels somewhat flimsy (IMO) when you go back and ride them......this being said, they still do a good job. Trail handling...Pro X way more fun to me especially when you get into some nasty junk....even like it better when its not whooped out. (I have both...Pro 700 and Xc 800 so I am not just biased towards the Pro X). Top speed....not an issue to me. Some suspension and clutching setup and adjust to minimize the front suspension attack angle and they can and will rock!
