OK, the second ride of the year came after a fresh 1+ feet of snow. I did not ride Sunday during the day and waited until Monday to go at it again. After waiting out the high winds in the am. I headed out around 2pm to get a few hours in. The snow is deep and if you get off trail just a little your stuck (3 times). Cliff will be grooming the DVSJ trails Wen. Night should be great the next day. Woodford is hard at it and will be in perfect shape by the time you read this. My new back pack worked well for charging my phone and hauling my gear. The Solar back pack is a cool deal and If anyone wants one let me know. Just keep it on the trail for the next few days until everything gets groomed or be ready to dig and dig, and dig..bt.

ps. good luck for anyone trying to climb Hogback or Glastonburry.....first person to the top gets two rounds on me....

Thanks for the update, leaving in a few minutes!

BT,

Just checked out that solar backpack, pretty good idea. Is that the one from Voltaic, about $200? I could see how that could help out in a potential survival situation. Sled dies, cell phone dead, start walking.....

The pictures look great, Deerfield vally and Woodford should be awsome this weekend, but I expect traffic to be very heavy. I've got the 22nd to the 1st off, and hope to get some decent riding in. Last year I took my new to me sled to Woodford after some of the big snows they had and buried my Grand Touring 4 times. There is a disadvantage to having a 600 lb machine!

Have fun up there, maybe catch you on the trails....

bring a good saw, a shovel, some snowshoes and a bunch of people.

we started with the down trail just after 12:00 opening day. theres a tree down about 800' from the tower on the last climb.

we didn't bring the chainsaw's so we spun the sleds and headed down.

so next was the up trail just about he same deal at a littel after 1 am and i'm off the trail up near the firetower trying to get around the downed trees.

fast forward to yesterday and we gave the back side a try.

the snow is VERY deep.

we made it to the last steep climb and the summit was buried. i forgot my camera, but not my cell so i doo have some crappy pics.

last night just before supper we gave the up trail another try and it was a lot deeper than sat night we couldn't even see our tracks from the night before. we were having a hard time just staying on the trail. i dont think they got any freezing rain up there.

it's hard too see when the snow is deeper than your windshield and covering your headlights

it's steep and deep and the summit with it's 144" track made some of the best runs i've ever made the mountian got the best of us this year.

btw: there was ony two of us

if we had you and or your crew, we would had made it for sure.

good luck!

First I would be careful crossing any open water for a few more days. Gas at the mall, I am sure has got to be 4 a gallon, but a old trick I find that works is lot's of gas cans. If you are going to ride from the Vintage, you will need gas if you go the long way to the mall through Mt. Snow. DVSJ will be grooming Wen. Night but I do not know if he will get all the way to the Vintage. There is a bunch of snow in the hills and the groomer has to get back at it again just like we all do at the start of the season. Jacksonville has been grooming a little and pulling the drag. Things should be shaping up just fine by the end of the week. You will have a much better ride than waiting until the circus comes to town by the weekend. Hope you and your son have a safe & fun trip..be safe....bt.

I am probably gonna ride from woodford and just crash at the vintage motel, since it is just down the hill, then grab some dinner at ponchos wreck.
I have stayed at the horizon with cliff and anna and love it there, just dont want to treck out that far since i am coming rt 7 . thanks for the info. I think I will drag a few cans of gas with me. how much is gas at jenks??? should be able to go to jenks and back to the mall no problem?? where does that trail take you that goes up from jenks???? up the powerline.
thanks
joe
Also if you stay at the horizon, how do you do that ride to the mall by mount snow??? I have ridden out of chimney hill to the sitzmark and then to dover to deacons den but could never find the trail fom there to go further north?? is it behind deacons den???I know you can cross the street and go to green mountain power plant or something but i think that takes you back to chimney hill. Also where the skyline rest is heartwellville??? when you cross the street how are those trails??? never ridden them. I used to enjoy going south from woodford to wilmington past the harriman reservoir??? or is that somerset reservoir.?? I remember when you could drive right near the white house inn and the cat dealer was across the street and drive right behind the schools near the ballfield and eat lunch in wilmington.
anyway thanks
joe

Just got home! Thanks for the info! We rode from Kelly Stand to Somerset Dam, then pulled a U-turn (trail not groomed) went back to 7. Took 7A around to the powerlines, crossed VT9 and headed towards Herriman. Turned around at the Heartwellville parking lot. All of Woodford's trails we went on, were just as flat and smooth as pavement. Never met another sled!! Put on 80.9mi. Not bad 150 for the season!! Off to a better start then last year.
