Went out for the first ride on Saturday and the speedo went nuts. At idle the reading (on digital setting) would jump around from 0 to 4 to 120 etc. Anybody have this happen with a MFD on their sled (06 Switchback)???

Take the 6 nuts off the speedo adapter where ithe sensor goes on the jack shaft and see if it looks weird and nothin broken.

I had this happen to my sled last year. Started off with the speedo jumping around. When I was driving it would go from reading the speed to 0 then to 120 and back to normal. Checked all the grounds and wire connections on the sled. The problem went away for awhile. Then one night when heading home from a good trip I hit a bump and the lights went dim as well as the speedo went to 0 and stayed there. Turned out the voltage regulator was bad. Had the dealer replace it with a new one(under warranty of course) and the sled has worked fine ever since.

Hope is not your regulator and just a bad connection of some sort.

Hope this helps.

I had the same thing happen after I installed the center flood light.
I had a check engine light ,no lights on dash. and false codes, etc
I noticed it after I hit the first bump.
I found the conection to the MFD wasnt snaped in tight.
Took some ribbing for that one.

The regulator is in a really really bad spot. It is located down under the oil tank and air box in that area. It is not the easiest thing to get out of there. The easy thing to try is take your sled to the dealer and see if they have a new regulator and plug it in. See if it makes any difference. Did you notice if your head lights went dim?

You can find the regulator by locating the harness that comes out from behind the exhaust. If I am not mistaken the mechanic had to remove the air box, oil tank and gas tank to replace the regulator.

Hope this helps.

Based on my theory and process of elimination I did take out the right part (I could see corosion) last night!!! Yeah I had to remove the airbox, unscrew the coolant jug and oil tank. Then I spoke to them realnice and they got out of the way without having to take off any hoses!!!!LOL . A nice long drill bit finished the removal process without causing any damage.
Anyone know if the regulator need a good connection to the tunnel?? Where it was rivited, had lots of oxidation so I dont think it had verygood contact.

From the looks of the picture it doesnt look like there was much corrosion under the regulator. So it probably had a good connection. The regulator that came off my sled last year still looked like new. I am not sure if the dealer can check it for you or not now that it is off the sled. I would see if they had a one in stock for you to try. Or rob one off your buddys sled and try it.

did your hand warmers and stuff quit working as well. Another thing you can do is take a piece of wire and bolt it to the regulator and then run the wire to a known ground point on the sled. This will give you a positive ground for the regulator. then plug it back in and start the sled. That might tell you if the regulator is working or not.

I was looking at your picture and it looks like a hole in the covering right under the bottom yellow wire. Might be the problem. Or it might be the picture.

There are some surface bubbles in the potting material but nothing that goes right inside. I'll let you know what happens.

OK, so I have changed the bloody regulator and still got the same problems. Now the Det light comes on once in a while and retards the timing like crazy!!!!
I have run 2 tanks of fuel thru it and it still happened last night. (-4ºF)
Any one have any more ideas or quick checks??? If not I'm going to tear into to it to trace every stinking wire.

The thing ran perfect when I put it away last spring, and of course the warrenty is now up!!!

Thanks so far guys!
