I have a 2003 SKS 800 that I bought a couple of months ago. Got to ride today for the first time. This is the first Polaris I've owed is why I'm asking. Sled runs great until you want to come down to an idle. It's kinda hangs up at about 3800 rpms and will eventually idle down. A buddy of mine said to blip the throttle quick and it'll come down sooner. I tried that several times and it seems like it wants to come down. But it almost seems to hunt a little.
I'm assuming it does this though the tps. Does the tps have a closed throttle position? Maybe it's not seeing that? Or is this a normal thing? Like I said never owned a Polaris before. Came from 25 years of Cats.
Thanks in advance.

It is normal when the pipe is hot, it is scavenging more efficiently. You can flip the choke on to cool the pipe/engine with extra fuel, and it will idle down.

Turn your idle down, either with the screw or directly from the throttle hookup

Dan that's normal for that sled.I thought something was wrong with it also When I owned it and went and had it looked at. they checked over everything and all was fine. Made me nervous at first to. Wayne

Thanks Wayne. It's a great sled. I love it.
Hey did you ever have issues with reverse? It just grinds. I haven't looked at it yet. Maybe just an adjustment.

Tuning with the fuel screws fixed the high idle on my Pro-X 800. It's hard to find the sweet spot between where it still has good low end throttle response right after engagement and still idles at normal RPM.

This holds true for my 02 XC800 too, I tune for best throttle response off idle, then blip the choke to make the rpms come down.

Also, your low speed fuel circuit may be plugged. I always remove and clean my carbs at the beginning of the season. I also use a little B12 in the fuel tank to keep the fuel circuits clean, it also helps as a fuel deicer.

Carbs were just done by the dealer I bought the sled from. I'm sure it's just a characteristic I wasn't aware of.

You can turn your air screws out another 1/8 of a turn or so and lean up the fuel screws as needed and get rid of most of that high idle business. I found that if i turned the fuel screws out 2.0 turns and turn out the air screws 1.75 turns is pretty close for the 03sks. (~1000ft) Needle should be in the middle position. I found that if I sneak up on getting the sweet spot by turning out the air screws seems to work best for me. That way you get real good throttle response off idle and slow speed but your not too lean to where it picks up the high idle stuff. (as much)

As for the reverse, there is a recall or service bulliten for those....... If it were mine and I have done this to one of mine, Rip that mechanical piece of $H!+ out of there and get a PERC Kit. Just be sure to get the Kit for the RMK, they are only a little over 300.00 on ebay and you can sell the JUNK you took out on ebay for about 150.00...

Good luck!

Mech. rev.works great. the grinding you have is because of the high idle.

My reverse is fine now. Was just an adjustment.

Also may want to check the throttle cable. If it is too tight will do the same but the "blip" probably wont bring it down. FYI...doesnt take much to be too tight either. It will idle high when stopping but 3800 seems a bit high. Check the cable, could be the culprit. Also will do if it is too lean, but seeing carbs were just cleaned I would have to assume they are adjusted properly???
