Sad news ! I do alot of ice travel and we follow common rules when on ice.
If you don't know don't go.
Never assume the ice is safe just because you see other tracks. Those tracks could have been made by someone going 90km/hr and your going 20km/hr .
Ice thickness minimum 8cm thick others will say 6cm .
Never park on ice in large numbers distribute your weight.
Stay away from mouths of rivers, channels or high current areas and watch for pressure cracks and breather holes.
Don't break new trail at night .
Always wear ice picks , floater suit , have a safety rope.
Always tell someone where you are going .
There are lots of safe ways to travel the ice and lots of fun to be had out their .
