Sad news ! I do alot of ice travel and we follow common rules when on ice.

If you don't know don't go.

Never assume the ice is safe just because you see other tracks. Those tracks could have been made by someone going 90km/hr and your going 20km/hr .

Ice thickness minimum 8cm thick others will say 6cm .

Never park on ice in large numbers distribute your weight.

Stay away from mouths of rivers, channels or high current areas and watch for pressure cracks and breather holes.

Don't break new trail at night .

Always wear ice picks , floater suit , have a safety rope.

Always tell someone where you are going .

There are lots of safe ways to travel the ice and lots of fun to be had out their .

Here is a survival video that may help someone in trouble.

Play safe sledheads! These kind of accidents can be avoided.

No, I dont think it could have been on Nippising, there are trails right out the the Islands now... went from north bay to Callander a few houndred feet out already with no problems.

Well you have to drive thru North Bay to get to Iroquois Falls glare.gif . It amazes me @ times when the media says an incident happened near Timmins (for example) & it actually happened near Hearst or Kap.

ya that was last weekend near Val Gagne

sledder went for a ride to Iroquois falls but never made it back

I don't think they found him

that is like 3hrs north of NB

yes it is a very unfortunate event, This happened just east of timmins. it has been -5 to -30 for the last month and the ice is still unsafe. my cottage is south of north bay and I will be checking the ice with a auger before I venture out.

well guys this happened in my home town it was on the abitibi river about 5 km down from twin falls power dam at the mouth of the black river that goes up to val gange. This part of the river never frezzes. They never found his body or his skidoo, and may never because about 4 km down is the the power dam behind the paper mill ( abitibi bowater ). The river was wide open where he went missing so you never know how far he may of went across the water. Also the river also has very steep clay banks and very big current. I know his parents and his sisters but never met him.I here he was a very good kid .This is the second 20 yr old to die in a accident in the past 2 months. The last one died in a fire where he was tring to help people get out of a apartment complex. He had been out and went back in also a very good kid.

I do alot of checking in our area where our camp is. Usually i'm the first one on the lake, but, i also check the ice regularly. I won't ride on it unless there is 6inchs of good ice consistantly. I usually cut anywhere from 12 to 30 holes and measure with a measuring tape. I check the more travelled areas at the start of the season. I noticed my self being alot more cautious the last few years. If i do go through and survive, i don't think i will survive a beating from my girlfriend. When it comes to ice, please play safe.
