want to check offset on clutches do I have to have a offset tool or can I just measure? thanks

there's a tool you can buy that checks it. prob have to order from dealer, most people dont buy them. i'm sure you could use a straight edge and measure it yourself too, but I don't know what the offset number is supposed to be. the dealer has service manuals that have that info though, so should be easy enough to find out. good luck!

the tool also tells you if the motor is aligned properly, kinda nice to know that as well. there only about 50 bucks.

River,

I don't have access to my service manual but I know on my SKS the offset is 5/8" at the front on the secondary. I have a piece of steel that is straight that I hold against the back of the primary. I then take a machinist scale, ruler, etc. and measure the offset at the front and rear of the secondary. You want the offset to be a little greater at the front of the secondary so that when the throttle is applied and the motor torques, it brings both clutches into alignment. On a sled with 5/8" offset spec, I would set up the secondary so that it floats on the jackshaft between 9/16 and 11/16 measured at the front of the secondary.

Also, don't forget to check your center to center spec as well.
