Just saw this on espn. Did not say what the cause was.

He had a lot of health issues with his lungs and diabetes. Had been sick for a long time.
What a life he lead though!

While most kids in the 70's were pretending to be pro ball players, I was riding my 35 lb Columbia bicycle with a fake plastic gas tank and fenders pretending to be Evil Knievel.
I had many cuts and scrapes pretending to be the Evil one home made ramps 
He was a terrific showman and one hell of a cool guy. RIP
