Went out Friday afternoon to try and fill one of my expanded archery tags here in Maine. I went down to an oak flat where i had seen alot of doe's in the early season in hopes of catching a buck cruisin for some of those doe's. I was going to fling an arrow at whatever came out either way. I Setup so i could see across a gullie and down this grassy road that goes out to a clearing. At about 3:15 i looked over my shoulder and there was a nice 8 pointer walking down the grassy road towards me from the clearing. I stood up and grunted and he stopped walking and started looking around. I grunted again and he pinpointed my location and started running towards me. I grabbed the bow and got the release on just as he was rounding a group of evergreens just on the top of the gullie. He was about 60 yards out and closing, all he had to do was go down in the gullie and when he popped up on my side he'd be at about 30 yards and closing at a 45 degree angle.
Just then BOOM, off goes a gun shot and he drops in his tracks. I was beside myself....i didn't see any orange anywhere (it was the 2nd to the last day of gun season), and i couldn't really tell where it came from. I finally saw a guy walking down from the direction of where i had parked. As it turns out, the guy parked right next to me and walked directly in to that spot and had no sooner stopped walking when that buck rounded the evergreens in front of him and turned towards me. He dropped him with a shotgun at 35 yards. He said "i don't why he was running like that..." I pulled out my grunt and said Here's why!! I told him what all had happened. The guy was very appolagetic for ruining my hunt and said that he knows people hunt the area but that he has never seen anyone down there on that oak flat where i was, everyone goes to the right into deeper woods. He said if he had any idea i was there he wouldn't have come in. If that guy had been 2 minutes earlier, or two minutes later, that deer would have had an arrow flung at it. What are the chances of that??? He has got to be the luckiest hunter i have ever seen!! Not really worth being PO'd about;although, if i had seen a vehicle parked there when i pulled in, i wouldn't have gone in.
So there you have it, i could have had a nice 8 pointer with my bow on the second to the last day of gun season, but instead i call it in for this bum! :-)
I'm having nightmares about it!! lol!!
Anyone ever had something like that happen to you?

Well i havent had that happen to me, but...

How has the season gone for you here in Maine..

I shot a doe with my expanded, and a button buck with my bonus antlerless rifle tag, and i still have my buck rifle tag, along with buck expanded..

Ive been hunting this one big buck for the past three weeks!! Ive only seen him once, and heard him chasing a doe another time, that is it!

Well, i missed a doe in september. Then i passed up a nice 2 yo 6 pointer the first week of the regular bow season, and i passed up several Doe's until i finally couldn't take it anymore and i shot a doe with my regular archery tag the last week of bow season. That was my only statewide tag and i couldn't hunt my best spots during november. BIG mistake, i'll never do that again. So i was banished to the expanded zone and this was the only opportunity at a buck i had over there. My buddy ended up shooting the big 204lb 7 pointer a week after i shot the doe, in the same area. We knew he was out there and it was the one i was trying to hold out for, but i got weak and took that doe. Never again!!! biggrin.gif
Congrats on two kills!! Thats an great accomplishment!!
Good luck the rest on the way.

Happened to me once last year and last night didnt see either person. It is getting overcrowded here in Southern NH two years in a row now my dad has had people walk into his hen call in the spring, when you can't even shoot them.

I had some clowns come walking through our property before...100 Acre farm. Not like they were still hunting. Diddy bopping and talking like they were on a nature hike. Not sure how you climb the fence of your neighbor's yard and claim you didn't know where you were. I was tempted to fire a slug into the ground beneath me to get their attention but I didn't. They got about 10 yds away before they noticed me.
