Full Version: Highest Quality Two place Clamshell/tilt trailer

I am considering purchasing a 12' clamshell two up. Wanted to get some thoughts on highest quality models around our area
both in regard to the trailer and accompanying clamshell. Was considering an inline but the price has got me rethinking.
Thoughts? I have started sniffing around Snow Pro and Sled Dock/ Avalanche but figured I would bring it to those in the know.
If this topic was covered recently somewhere I will put a bullet in this but my search didn't reveal much.

Thanks

Dave

I've had great luck with the Karavan aluminum trailer with snopro shell. Had several but now own a snopro box trailer

I've had really good luck with my Sno Pro 4 place v nose enclosed, I towed it all the way to Florida and back in July with no problems, but ive heard some bad things since they got bought out by thule, I dont know if the clamshells have changed but the box trailers seem to be having a lot of hardware problems.

I have a Sno Pro Extreme Clam shell, bought it last season from Dasilva, s in Hampstead NH. I love it, both trailer and clamshell made by snow pro towed it to Colebrook and back 7 times last season, it is still in brand new condition. I shopped around be fore I bought it I looked at Karavan and High Country and decided on Sno Pro in my opionin it was the best quality

I’ve got the sledock avalanche and in my opinion it’s the best one out there for the money. John put a lot of thought and his own experience into designing these trailers and took care of the many small details that make all the difference in quality, usability and long term durability. Plus he stands behind his product and it’s nice to know you can bring a product back to someone local for repairs or warranty coverage if you have a problem.

Good luck in your search

I would closely at the hinge area of any trailer you buy. I have a sno-pro top and it split wide open where the bolt goes threw for the hinge(the metal wore threw from rubbing when opeining and closing). A friend has a triton trailer with top, I think its an elite, anyway the whole top and the way it hinges and fits over the siderails is night and day better than what I have. Dan from ODS carries the triton line. Hope that helps you make your decision. I wish sno-pro would stand behind my broken top.

I love my Sno-Pro extreme clam shell. I had an issue w/ the latch for the tilting deck, brought it to the dealer and sno-pro took the trailer back and replaced the whole tongue and front crossmember, would recommend them anytime!
Sno-ProF5

Nothing but good things to say about Triton. I have the Triton clamshell & have over 12,000 miles on it (twelve thousand)
We drive up from South Carolina to Pittsburg with it every year, great trailer & if I washed & waxed her she would not look far off from the day I bought her. Pulls fantastic do not even know she is back there.

Cant go wrong with it, good luck with your decision-

The only 2 clam shells I would buy are the Floe (if you can find a dealer) and a Triton. I do think sled dock may make one two and there caps are the best in the biz. All the other clam shells have trouble with welds braking, clamps breaking, axles bending, etc.. I had a Floe and it was an excellent clam shell.

As of Mid Summer Thule has sold back the trailer company back to the original owners of Sno-Pro. We have been a dealer for then a number of years now and they have always stood behind their product. We have a large selection in stock. Give us a call 603-668-4343 or www.hkpowersports.com.

Unforunately I know a couple of guys who had Sno-Pros when they were Sno-Pro and they had issues with welds breaking. Not trying to bash but a trailer is a better investment than a snomobile and the person should do a lot of research before they buy. There are a lot of shitty trailers on the market that cost big money and in the end the consumers get a raw deal if they do not do the research. Both Sno-Pros lasted 3 years before stuff starter to break.

It is the same with drive in drive off trailer. The Renegade is the best one on the market and if you look at all other ones and do your research you will see why they are the best. There is no question they are probably the most expensive as well but at the end of the day you get a superior trailer over a Sno-Pro, Destination, Blizzard, etc.

I am not saying they are a bad trailer there are just better ones out there.

I have a sled dock cap, nothing special IMO. Smooth side Triton would be my choice for a tilt trailer and clamshell.

My sno-pro Has been great . It's a 2002 Model Sno-pro extreme. Came from HK in Hooksett. I have had good luck with it. I wash it down after every use. Every thing looks good underneath. I did replace one shock that locked up on me though. I also replaced the front hinged bolts with stainless steel ones.

All in all it hasn't given me any problems.

I like the Triton. The one I have is 5 years old and the top still works great and tows straight. Check with Dan@ the outdoor shop he sells them

I have a snopro xtreme... like the way the crossmember runs the whole length of the bed for support, also has the wishbone hitch which I find more stable when tipped up in the air for loading. Has the lift assists on the hitch, so someone doesn't have to stand on the back and hold it down while loading and lastly I like the way the hitch holds down and secures the bed tight to the hitch over the pins that make egg shaped holes and bounce up n down and it swivels out of the way easily n quick. I have a high country top which I like too, very roomy for extra gear.

Markem,

Is that the new style one? I was down at HK and the new ones had that nice set up on the front for holding the trailer down. I will prob get a newer one hopefully next season. My buddy has a I think a blizzard. I like how those have the wiring. Its allwrapped up good in a nice rubber coating.

Snow coming!!
Loose Cannon
I've had karavans, tritons and own a renegade (full enclosed though). I would say my fav out of them is the renegade for build quality. The triton is really nice too, I had one with a sled dock cap and it worked great. My buddy just picked up a trailer and cap from sled dock this last spring for decent money (they are making trailers now). If money were no object- renegade; if on a budget- sled dock is the best bang for the buck. imo.gif m2c.gif

I dunno, mine is a 2004

Click to view attachmentI have had this problem with 2 sno pros. I now have a "high top", a company start up from people that left sled dock. They claim the highest height. Corners are gusseted. seems to be built well, time will tell. Triton does make a very good top but you also pay for it. When I was looking a year ago their was only one that I thought was below the rest. Avalanche?, the cap with lights on the clamshell for brakes, turn, and the front hatch did not come with a lock.

I have a 12' Triton also and it's great. Whatever you do look for a trailer with a wishbone tongue. This is always the weakpoint on these tilt type trailers. I would hate to have only the one bolt holding the whole trailer together like on the non-wishbone tongue.

Wow, Thanks for all the replys folks buttrock.gif

I like the idea that Avalanche is made right here in NH (they are about a half hour from my house). I also like the idea of the shell covering from the outside of the trailer sides which would allow for more loading room. Of course, how it works in reality might be different?? I am going to take a look at various trailers today.

Where is the Dan/Outdoor Shop? Is this in South Yarmouth? I know Rochester sells Triton so I will probably go there unless there is a closer dealer to my location in Danville NH. I will check out the Sno Pro extreme at DaSilva or HK. Currently I own a Floe two place 10' Tilt with removable shield and would just buy a cap for it but I would like a 12' trailer. I also own a four place fully finished enclosed SnoPro but will probably be selling it since my kids are grown up and I am selling some of my sleds.

With respect to the wishbone tongue, I do not think the Triton Elite 12-101 has wishbone. The other two do.

Skidoo440, did you mean the Triton cover was above the rest or below?? Maybe I am misinterpreting? Where is High Top sold out of?

Please feel free to continue with inputs. I will likely make a decision in a week or two after looking at each and getting pricing.

Once again, this forum rocks!!

Enjoy the Sunday night nirvana.

Yeah, I have the LT12-101WB. There wasn't too much difference between the LT and the Elite. It's nice having the longer trailer too especialy if you have a 136" sled. Got it last year at Ken's for about $3,000.

My problem is with the sno-pro cap, exactly the issue that ski-doo440 points out. Its where the top hinges with the trailer. In response to the post by HK Powersports I have sent them an emial with a picture of my issue to them, and hopefully Sno-Pro will step up to bat with excellent customer service and resolve that for me. I'll keep you guys posted on their response.

I hear what you are saying about the issue resolved by having a wishbone, but when traveling the tongue is wrapped by the trailer bed and it adds strength. I have not had an issue with that part of my trailer.

Skidoo440, did you mean the Triton cover was above the rest or below?? Maybe I am misinterpreting? Where is High Top sold out of?
Triton makes an excellent top but it also tends to be more money than some other quality caps.
Hightop is sold on rt9/202 west of rochester. It is east of Bickfords sd and the the rotary/ traffic circle. Nottingham may be the town. They build them right their and i believe they also picked selling kayaks. good luck

Thanks skidoo400, they must be right near the Dyers folks then as they are only 300 yards form Rte 4 on 152. I checked out the Avalanche there on Sat
and was quite impressed with it. I see what folks mean about (lack of) locking down the back of it but it was a nice setup. Unfortunately no one was around to talk to.

I went to Rochester power sports and saw the Triton Elite but they did not carry Triton shells. I also checked out the Snow Pro extreme at Dasilvas. Now comes the hard part, making the decision as all appeared to be well made. I am concerned about the reports on the hinging with the Sno Pro. I would like to get to talk to the Avalanche folks. It does not appear that I will get to check out the Triton top anywhere reasonably local.

Thanks to all for the input!!!

Dave

Look at the warranties too. That made my decision to go with High Top. They offered me a 2 year where everybody else had a max of 1 year. Good luck
