Hey Guys,

I'm hopeing for some imput

Last years last ride my temp light came on and the sled shut down in the middle of no-where by myself. I waited for ten minutes, checked coolant ok,and started again only to happen 20 miles later, then 40 miles later till I made it home.

So last week i did a compression test and found 120psi on 1 and 90psi on 2.

I knew overheating was the problem so I started to take apart that cylinder, here are some pics

I hope I can get away with replacing the piston and rings, removing the aluminum off the cylinder with muratic acid and lightly honing the cylinder as to not remove the Nicasil coating. There are a few nics in the cylinder around 3/32" in diameter.

What type of hone should I use and any ideas as to what caused the hole in the piston?

Thanks

This is how I would look at it. Are you just going to trail ride this sled? is yes then, are any of the nicks in the cylinder above the highest port? (Will it effect compression). If not, I would do exactly what you said, take the aluminum off the nicasil with muratic acid and hone it.

Yeah, I'm just trail riding and the nicks are below the highest port,

Thanks for your input.

Use a finishing ball hone with a light oil, actually kerosene and 2 stroke oil works real well, and the muratic acid won't bother the nicasil, it will clean up nice and do a light hone and it will put a nice cross hatch in there.
