According to the Rep I was talking to today at Garmin Tech support, you don't need to change the power to the unit, to DC, it just needs to be in the range of voltage that the unit wants to see. For example for my unit it will run on anything from 8 volts to 35 volts AC or DC.
He also stated that the newer units that run off 2 AA battery's ( 3 volt ) will also run off of more than 3 volts.
Now If it were me I would call to find out just what your exact unit requires but I see this as a good thing, simply because we don't necessarily have to go and install all of these fancy voltage regulators/ rectifiers on the sled just to power them up!
A simple voltage regulator that limits the voltage to your max rating is all that you should need, or am I missing something??
