I am having some problems with my shocks onmy edge.

I am not sure if i should just rebuild them or if i shuold just buy some new ones.

They are not much more for new shocks but still about 20 more dollars.

Im sort of leaning towards buying new ones but i am just asking for some advice maybe to help out a little.

thanks

did he give you a price or would i have to bring my sled over there for him to give me an estimate?
XCR1250
I'm still on the phone with him, you want to call him now?

Not to sure what kind of prices you were told to do a re-build, but new shocks are gonna run you at least a 4 or 500 bucks to replace them all.

Depending on what your old shocks need done to them you should be able to have them rebuilt for a whole lot less money than going new.

I think I paid less than $120 to have all 4 of my shocks done thru JB shocks, a member here on this site.

im only needing to replace the rear shock.

that is why i am leaning on buying a new one becuase it will be a little bit of a better deal.

new vs used.

I would look around for a new clicker for the Edge there used to be some on Ebay sold for around $175.00. But look for the trail version the race version is also out there and that may be too stiff. You could still sell your old one for $50.00 or so.

Unless the rear shock is damaged beyond repair a rebuild is the better way to go. It will be much cheaper and you will (depending on rebuilder) have better oil then stock when you are done.

Those are usually good for 1 season. Waste of money.

never heard anything good about the Kimpex stuff. Spending the same $ on a quality rebuild/revalve and you'd have a much better shock.

This thread is a trainwreck.

Why would you waste $68 you could have had it rebuilt for $35.00 if you could find someone local. homework.gif

Ok, now your first post makes a little more sense. I was trying to figure out how you were saying that buying a new shock was close to the price to having your fox shock re-built.

Just my opinion here, and many others by the looks of it, but there is no way a kimpex shock can be compared to a stock or for that matter a re-built fox shock.

To even try to compare the two would be like comparing a pinto to a corvette. Just not in the same league.

The Kimpex shocks are a fine replacement for the shocks on your average 80's sled, but todays sleds ask much more out of their suspensions and expecting the Kimpex shock to even try to deliver anywhere near to the same ride quality as the fox shock that came with your sled, well, thats just nuts in my opinion.

You would be much further ahead and have less out of pocket expense if you were to just have a re-build done on your factory shock.

Leave the Kimpex shocks to the guys running around on 1980 star-fires or whatever.

Again, this is just my opinion.
orion
agreed

Kimpex is no comparison to a Fox shock.

Question, did that include all new parts, top & bottom end cap seals, IFP seal, rod seal, fill valve seal, bleeder valve seal, internal wiper, external wiper, piston & IFP wear strip, oil, and gas?
Or just disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and new gas and oil?

I would have to dig up my invoice but I believe I had to have a couple of shaft seals replaced and maybe a few other small parts replaced but for the most part this was for a complete go thru and to clean them and then replace the oil and recharge the shocks.

If you read my post you quoted, I said that his cost would depend on what all he needed done to his shocks. Seeing how he did not say what was wrong with them and I could not see them first hand to give an opinion I was just offering my opinion on what I would do if it were me.

Now as far as pricing goes, I normally have my shocks gone thru every year. I find that they stay in top notch form this way.

I have had the very same service that Jerry did for me, done by some of the other vendors you see mentioned around here on this site. I can say that Jerry's prices and service is second to none and his turn around time is better than any of the others I have had to deal with.

Some of these shock rebuilding guys are charging an arm and a leg for a simple shock service where they are just taking them apart, cleaning them and putting them back together with some new oil and a charge of gas. For this they want you to pay them a hundred bucks or so per shock. Now thats just plain nuts if you ask me!!

I agree.

That is crazy, I do my own shock and I do some for others and $100.00 per shock is nuts.
Gen2
I send mine to Goodwins in Zion,Il and it's around $35 per shock and $18 extra for revalving. quick turn around too !
RCX
I had my 10 year old fox shocks rebuilt, nothign wrong with them just needed the internal piston height set, new oil and a nitrogen charge, as good as new. I knew the guy so I didn't have to pay anything, but I belive fast charges only like 40-50 per shock on the high end. Check with them if nothing else.
