Full Version: How difficult is it to pull and put in the skid?
HCS Snowmobile Forums > Snowmobile Forums > Polaris General Discussion > Fusion/IQ chassis
r.a.
I have not done it on a fusion. I want to replace slides, they will not slide out thru the windows.I had a hacksaw track put on it when it was new. The windows are about 1/4 inch smaller than the hyfax.I know I could open a window up a little but I would just soon not.By looking it seems pulling the skid is easy but I have had problems in the past getting them back in, that is on an edge.
Thanks for any help

get 2 people to help you. 1 person to hold the track open and 2 people to slide the skid into place.

me, my dad, and my dads friend did this lastnight to a 96 Indy 600 skid (we replaced the track). it was as simple as store bought pie!!

Lift the rear end high enough, loosen the track adjustments all the way, and the rear skid will slide right out. Helps to have an extra set of hands.

He has it right for taking it out. But when you put it back in turn the sled on it's side slide the skid in the track 2 bolts 3 or 4 turns, carfully turn sled on other side put the other 2 bolts in. I don't understand why people try to fight it back in.I had a buddy told me I was nuts for doing this way until he watched be do it in 10 min. Now every one I no does it this way. The only reason you need 2 people is so you have somone to amase as you do it

You can pull hyfax through a hacksaw- I did last week. Just pry the ends of the hyfax to fit through the window and once there is enough meat sticking through the track grab the hyfax with locking pliers and pull. I prefer pulling the skid to change them, but this time I did it the lazy way.

One thing I do to make it easy to get back in and take out is place 2 hockey sticks between the track and the rails drop the skid onto the sticks then just slide it out no wrestling involved when putting back in place skid on sticks and slide back in totally a one man job.

i pull skids weekly all winter, here is what i wrote in the prox forum

here is what i do, i can get one out in about 10 min and in 15. jack the back end up. first loosen the rear wheels all the way. second take out the rear two bolts and let the skid drop to the floor (only jack up about 3 or 4 inches right now). then pull the torsion springs out of the retainer and let them spring all the way around and tuck in behind the outside wheels. makes ure to not hurt yourslef doing this they got lots of springs to them, i always where gloves to then doing that. after that take the front to bolts out. them loosen the front track shock sping as loose as you can. rap a rachet sprap around the FTA and hook the two hook onto a cross rail somewhere in the suspension (doesnt matter which one oyu just wnat enough out to runn the rachet) them rachet the FTA down as far as you can. after this ge someone to help and jack it up a little higher. one of you pull the front toward on side and the other bull the back the other way. it comes out very easy.

like timespentsearching suggests, twist the torsion springs back, this compresses (flattens) the suspension down and makes it much easier to pull the skid.

yep once you do it a few time you get really good at it, the first time is the slowest. as a racer and a shock rebuilding i pull alot of skids. its always better to have two people but you can do it by yourself to, just have your friends rachets straps help a little more. i can get one out and in allown in a 15 min out 25 in. its a good idea to before every season take it out, check everything, grease everything and if needed get shocks rebuilt. make sure to check all you bushing and bearing to make sure they are not shoot. also broken bolts oblonging holes, and cracked plastic pieces.

I trim 1/8'' off both sides of the track windows, slides come right out! Trim the windows at the camoplast logo so its easy to find. I have done this to many sled in the past 10 years with no problems at all.

I am with TDI-HAM. He also didn't mention to put a little WD-40 on the window and slides. They will come right out without removing the skid. But....It would not be a bad idea to pull it and check every out.

Thanks for the advice tipping it on its side worked slick doing it by myself.Took me longer than 10 minutes but it wasnt bad.I was a little nervous about scratching the hood but I had enough blankets. Thanks again

I have done them both ways, and an extar person to balance the sled on it's side is always helpful to avoid cracking & scratching.

For pulling them out without tipping the sled, I find an overhead hoist works really nice for raising & lowering the sled back onto the skid.

I like the hockey stick trick to slide everything out, thank you. I haven;t pulled out the 144" yet. maybe this week for a lube & inspection. and as long as it is out, I'll upgrade to the 225# front spring for the next owner's enjoyment.
