i going to go ahead and put in the black carb slides. i am also going to check the water pump for leaks or what not depending how busy i am going to be, going to try to rebuild it as well. i have not ridden this thing yet since i bought it so i have no clue what i am in for, my last sled was a 95 xcr 600 and i loved it, was plenty fast. i have been reading a few others posts and have noticed people playing with the clutches. Now i have no clue if they have been done or not, but am pretty sure they are stock due to the fact that i cant see anything after market done to it, plus the guy who owned it before me was older and a seat jack on it and said he and his wife rode around on it and thats it. The sled has 1600 miles on starts and idles like a champ! should i play with the clutches or leave it alone and ride it first this year?

thanks mario

1600 Miles.. on the sled.. low mileage.. I would check out the clutches for wear.. and maybe rebuild them also check out what tuning components are in it.. weights and springs.. replacements I would start off with almond round and a set of 10-62's
go thru the secondary.. what's in it for helix and spring.. probably replace the buttons at least..

the water pumps are typically good for 4000 miles.. but as I think about it it could go sooner on a sled with less miles if riden
less such as this sled.. what I am getting at is the bearing and internals have been sitting in the same coolant for as long or longer
and could be subject to being in just as bad of state as if ridden for 4000 miles.. milage could be a coincidence and could be time in
the coolant that could cause an issue.. rebuild the pump is my ending statement.. worth the time and investment to knowing its good going into the season..

When you get it out on the lake and see how it runs you will want to pull about 8100- 8200 RPM that is where they make the most hp stock You will get a alot of GOOD advice from the guys on this site how to make they go I know they helped me get mine dialed in. Roger and Phil know there stuff.

Actually, the stock clutching on that sled is not so bad for all-round use. I'd say leave them stock for now. Coming from a 95 XCR, the 800 will be a rocket ship! Heavier clutching also leads to more track spin in my experience, you'll need more traction unless you just want to dig trenches lol.gif

Some other things I installed on mine and would recommend highly is running board traction and a handlebar riser. Both gives a noticeable improvement in ergo's IMO.
On my 00 there was only room for a 1" riser, would need a longer brake hose to go higher.

i might stick with stock for the season, its picked 100 something forgot to mention, i will probably do 85% trails and 15% lake so i will try the stock set up see how it does.
