So i have a quick question and i am very new to the sport in vt (just picked up my first two sleds!) so forgive me if this is a stupid questions, but is there anywhere in VT or in the neighboring states that you can go more open area riding. Last year i was out in WY and it was just free range, was curious if there is anything like that around here.

No such thing as a stupid question.

Not usually unless you own your own land, or have the permission of a land owner to ride in their fields, etc. I have the permission to use someone's field (through a friend), and it's great for pre-season riding or just messing around in the powder.

I also ride in Elmore State Park which is kind of open. Not a lot of room but I don't think it's illegal...

Welcome to the best trail system in the country. Sound a little biased? You bet!!! The rules are different for VT trails because of the nature of the beast. There is a statute that clearly states that riding off the trail is considered tresspassing and carries a stiff fine. That includes state parks. My advice is to get a copy of the rules and regs., read and understand the contents. We work very hard to secure permission from landowners and from the State. We have a great system, but we are limited to the area between the stakes. It's not like the "good ole days". But in the good ole days a long ride was 25-30 miles. Like has been mentioned, find a landowner that'll allow the access and enjoy. State Parks are a restricted area, so stay on the trail or face the fine. The State will shut us off if they find abuses. It's hard to pass up that huge field with 2' of powder, but.....
Hope this helps. This may sound a bit paranoid, but I spend a ton of time every year as an active Club member, and it kills me every time I have to go back to an upset landowner who has just had a sled buzzing his first year alfalfa field. That's the worst part of the sport. There are 4000 plus miles of trails, enjoy every mile.
