thanks for the reply tekguy
Its a pavilion.I hooked up a inthernet line to that router you speak of ,talked to linksys for about a hour trying to get it to work, she tryed all kinds of stuff then said needed to contact HP.So called them & they said they don't have a interface card for that old of pc.I never even heard of this interface before .So I'm not shur what I need.I thought maybe it was just a disk that I could download to activate the internet.

It stoped working on the net few years back, it might of had a viruse. So did a system recovery then had someone add more ram to it & he tussed the one that came with the pc.I'm seeing if he can do something with it.I copied your reply & gave it to a friend at work to give to him.Hopefully I can get this thing up with out sticking to much more money in it.it is a lot faster with the ram & my daughter is playing games on it right now.

thanks brad

with Windows 98 you need to manually configure your network protocols TCP/IP, etc... and verify you they are configured correctly, dont assume that they will be installed automatically by loading the driver for Network card, anyways your problem maybe as simple as tcp/ip isnt loaded or configured correctly or it could be something tougher, but I couldnt tell ya from here
