Sweet find, but it looks like it is electric start only. Most sleds were pull start or had a pull starter back up. Probably not intended for a sled, but hey I've seen stranger things than e-start only so I don't know for sure.

i think your right, no pull start, probaly not for a sled, BUT, still interested in finding out where i can get some parts to make it run.
thanks for the reply

it looks like it has a pull start pulley on it to me. It just doesnt come with a recoil. You would just take your starter rope with a handle and a knot in the other end, wrap it around the pulley with the knot sticking out that little notch to hold it in place, and give it a pull. Then you would have to re-wrap it and pull again if it didnt start. I have a 64 Arctic that has this type of starter rope.

I know cat used the 372cc JLO for many years, but I have never heard of a 395cc. That engine looks very similar to the 340cc and 372cc JLO singles I have seen in snowmobiles.

i just found out Arctic Cat used a 395cc JLO in a 69 Panther racer! could be the same engine!

I believe that the 395 is an upgraded 372. I have a buddy that has a kit that included piston and head to make a 372 a 395. So you are right, that is a racing upgrade. I have a junk 340 jlo. It may have an intake and reciol. I will look and get back to you...Gunnsy

thanks sixty8cat,
having a bit of trouble locating parts, i am interested in making this thing run.

All the parts you are missing can usually be found at any swap meet, as most of the JLO 295 340 and 372s used compatible parts. You will need to find an intake that will accept a HD sized carb. There are HR sized manifolds but that combo won't work on a 395. Polaris also used that engine for a time and electric start versions came with the rare screen and hub style manual start. Remove the screen, install a donor hub and recoil assy, and your good to go. One thing I notice is there is no retainer bolt holding on your Salibury clutch. DO NOT try to start this engine until you find the proper hardware to replace the missing clutch parts.

It is impossible to answer your belt question without knowing what you are going to install the engine in. It is probably set up to use a 1 3/16" belt. Center to center distance will need to be determined.

Guessing that with a standard can type muffler you could expect about 24-28 HP. Maybe. It will have more torque than RPM.

The top shroud looks a little beat up to me. It usually is a bit flatter across the top. [ Actually that piece is almost always missing, seemed to be removed and discarded from many machines.]

Not to get off subject ,but I just purchased a 69 panther that has those exact cut outs on the side of the hood with those vent screens. Thats not factory done right? I just found it odd to see two the same in completely different parts of the country. Do you know the history on the side vents?

those hood vents are aftermarket. I would assume to get more clean air to the carb. Dont know if there was a recommendation for that or not?
