Pretty sure you have to take the tank out also, then you should be there. But, only saw it once when they first came out. Good Luck and keep posting photos incase I do mine this year? Are you replceing them with the new 08 plugs?

I can't pull the tank out. There must be something else I need to remove first.
I actually want to check the wiring harness, I've heard it rubs against the steering post and wears right through.

Maybe the seat rail comes off? not sure.

I removed the 6 bolts holding the seat rails to the tunnel but there seems to be resistance by the steering post.

The mech's at Nelson's told that was a heck of a job to change the plugs on a Z1 and they have had to do a few already. Their advice was not to buy one until Cat gets this worked out.

I seen it done last year at the dealer and what I remember it was pretty simple.I believe there were like 4 torx screws that had to be removed near the handle bars.that removes a panel and the plugs are right the plenty of room to work. When I bought it I heard they were a nightmare to change and he showed me right on the spot.I will look at mine tonight and will give you more info.I have to change them any ways

First of all, why are you doing this yourself? Are you past your warranty? Either way you should check with your dealer as it may be covered. Second, if you go over to any of the sportbike forums you never find people complaining about changing plugs in a GSX-R because you simply don't.
In this case Murphy bit the Cat in the butt a little so they have to be changed, but only once, this will not be a regular job. There is an improved sparkplug with an improved start-up cal available shortly so see your dealer!
If you still want to change them yourself I would be happy to give you some tips.

Its called preventive maintenance so you dont get stuck in the middle of nowhere in sub zero temps. The cost of two plugs is worth the peace of mind. Its not like breaking down on a bike on the side of the road. And changing the plugs is not hard the mechanics that say it is probrably havent changed them yet

You need to remove the 6 screws at the base of the seat track and the 4 screws at the top of the track as well. Remove the fuel lines and the vent hose and unplug the fuel pump. you may have to pull pretty hard on the tank to remove it. the air box has a sensor that plugs into it that you cant see until it is removed. also there is one on the top near the front of it. loosen the clamps that hold the air box to the throttlebodies. The air box is harder to get out of the chassis than the fuel tank, it is jammed in there!! you will have to remove the coils from on top of the spark plugs then replace them.
Just as fair warning, putting it all back together is harder than taking it apart.
I hate doing them but if thats what the customer wants... I would strongly recommend taking it to your dealer.

In the old days YOU actually had a reason to change plugs!
..I know a Z1 owner who changed over to IRidium plugs..
ONE full Saturday..and a whol'lott'a Mutha effing!
BTW ..he says it will be 5 mph faster and get 2-5 mpg better. Thats his conclusion and he's sticking to that myth.
BTW I installed a set of Iridiums in my ZR9...Im still telling myself , there worth 7.50 ea.(?)

I was just wondering if the new 08 plugs will help with cold starts? I had a hell of a time with my 07 Jag last year when the temps dropped below 10 degrees F.

I would think it should be an improvement should be warranty according to manual if plugs are causing a no start.I hope I do not have that issue as I ride many days in temps colder than that.

Well I guess I will not be having any cold start issues as was -26C - 14 F overnight and sled started very very easily. The polaris on the other hand was more than a few pulls to get her goin. This is gonna be sweet, just turn the key and go.
