so I call them to get coverage for a sled I'm picking up in the US this weekend.. she asks me where I'm getting it from and I tell her; she asked me straight up...
they told me I have to fax them - the b.o.sale - customs form 1 - appraisal papers and photos

I had no idea
anybody want to insure my new sled for its trip?

Just throw it on a trailer and bring it home.
Insure it once all the RIV BS is over and done with.

ya I agree with Iceman. I'm looking at a run to the States for a sled myself. I wouldn't bother insuring it for the ride from.

As previously mentioned, get it over here, transfer all the paperwork into your name, then get it insured.

Strange. I bought an ATV in the US in Sept. and simply called and provided the VIN prior to buying it to have it
covered.
That was with TD/Melloche Monneux

Many insurance companies want pics of the sled

inevitably I will just bring it back, didn't know if it was common though.
if I had known I wouldn't have said anything.. I asked them this and of course they said it would be material misrepresentation... but I wouldn't have had coverage anyways.
I know I won't feel right until it is covered, but my hands are tied... thanks guys
oh and they do want pics of the sled.. said go to autotrader and they have to take the pics and do an appraisal on it. I'm okay with that, had to do it once with a new car...( it was brand new... perfect 100%)

If you're really worried about hauling it home, call your auto provider and see if you can buy a rider for the purpose for a day or two?

Hey Sled Dude,
Saw the ad - what's wrong with the motor on the sled?
How much did you get it for?
Looks like a good deal to me...

Like most insurance companies you have to have established business with them before they will cover it for you or take ownership. I am at TD and they cover my purchases from the states everytime.

I dont have my auto with them anymore, but I've had sled insurance through them for 3 or 4 years now.. the person I spoke to was very well informed about this, or learns really quickly...

Dude that seems odd they won't cover it when you pick it up particularly if your existing poilicy for the old sled is still active?.....generally you have 14 days to advise your insurer of a substitution of vehicle.....this is law in Ontario
If you cancelled your policy when you sold your old sled....that is your problem ....
I spoke with one of my underwriters at Economical when I read this thread to confirm the above and was told that in the case of a car for eg it must be plated in the state were registered or a trip permit issued by that state ...within the legal requirments of that state. Then you bring it across , pay all duties and get a K22(?) form and proceed to the MTO to transfer to Ontario plates ....all within the 14 days.
I was told this is for existing policy holders only and not new applicants..
In the case of a sled you are trailering so plated to drive not an issue,...
Maybe ask to speak to a supervisor rather than the "phone slug" you spoke with......or as suggested speak to your auto insurer...
IMO if you don't suceed ....buy a lock and chain and insure it when you get home....

I thought it was odd too, but this CSR was not hesitating at all. she knew her stuff and even commented.. "800 huh".. not like they haven't insured the exact same sled (2 years older) for 2 years now... what a joke
maybe they dont want me...
never cancelled the old sled, yesterday was the first they had heard about it.

i had insurance with TD... prices were good, all was great untill i had to make a claim! WOW, when you almost die, they could care less about you, they made the whole situation 100% more stressfull!! RUN AWAY FROM TD!!! they wouldnt insure my new truck cause it was imported, they wanted an appraisal done also.... so f-that. I got insurance through Wawaneesa... cheaper, and its in town. no 1-800-i-dont-give-ashit anymore. They had no problems insuring US sleds for me.

ya I knew this would happen.
they attacked the market, bought up a bunch of companies and now are scaling back.. it happens all the time in the life side of the industry.
there is something to be said about having a broker! they can tell you all this stuff up front so you dont have to get the shaft... shop you around so you dont have to call 10 million different people.

TD wouldnt insure my imported truck either untill it was appraised. F-that. The heck with them, i would never insure anything with them ever again... Sure they have great rates, untill it comes time to make a claim. 1-800-i dont give a shit about you.... thats all i got when i was in a serious car accident(not at fault). I got passed on through FOUR accident benefits adjusters, and THREE vechile adjusters. Customer service there is bullshit.... steer clear.

TD/Primmum/meloux meloche, are the same co. Call up and ask for the same person you were speaking with the other day... good luck! Ask to speak to a superior..... again... good luck!!!! They will put in a request to have a superior call you back within the next 48 hrs. Ya right! These companies are a joke!!! For some people they are good for years.... untill you speak to them! Then look out! I went through the same thing years ago with my streetbike. Everytime I spoke to someone I got a different story! Seemed like they didn't want to insure me anymore, and just made it difficult. An insurance company cannot refuse to insure you, but they can make it difficult and you decide not deal with them. I went elsewhere and got insurance on my bike through a broker. Thought I was fine until I was cancelled for not disclosing an at fault accident!!! I had a not at fault accident when I was at Primmum. The driver of the car was charged!. I was told by phone, and letter that it would not affect my rates. It did. When I called, and tried to have the problem resolved is when all the bs started. Thats why I ended giving up on them and going elsewhere. Primmum did fix the at fault problem for me though.... by putting 2 at faults on my record!!!!

The exact same thing happened to me. I was in an accident (completely not my fault - guy was in a turning lane, waiting to turn left, I was coming straight through the intersection, so I had right of way. He "apparently" didn't see me, and turned right into my car, writing it off), and they gave me the complete run-around about it. I never once spoke to the same adjuster as the first one I spoke to when I called, and then everytime I spoke to someone new, they gave me another story and runaround. It was such a complete and total clown show. I ended up switching to a local broker, whose rates were half of what I had been paying with TD (and have gone down EVERY year since, compared to TD whose went up every year).

I had my '06 ZR9 stolen from my locked garage last year, and TD was great for me! They gave me top dollar, probably a couple thousand more than I could have sold it for privately. I was very surprised, but pleased. Rates hardly changed for this year since they sent me a letter saying I was 0% liable after the incident.
Oh, and I only put insurance back on a couple weeks before cause the policy expired and I thought I had it sold. Glad I put it back on when I did, but I was worried it would look suspicious...
