Looks like I'm going to be in Nova Scotia next year for school. About 45 minutes out of Halifax on the coast. As far as I know they really dont much for snow so where is the snow? Will it be worth it to bring my sled otu that way? I've wanted to ride the hills in NFLD for awhile so I think I will take my sled. But where is the snow in Nova Scotia and how far from Halifax? Thanks.

It is calling for Snow this year and cape breton always gets it and the drive is worth it. 45 minutes from Halifax should land you in Truro. Going to AC? or community college? I would be happy to go sledding with you when the snow shows up. The lake race scene here is pretty good. Lots of guys go with their "stock " machines and play around. Its all in fun. Bring your sled. Storage will not be a aproblem if you are on residence. I know lots of people. Let me know if I can help.

I forgot. Check out the post titled " stuck in a drift". Lots of those pictures are from last year in Cape Breton. Tons of snow.

Welcome, always looking for more people to go sledding. We got several snowmobile clubs that are connected with some pretty good trails. Don't let EA Sports fool ya about Stock sleds, there is no such thing, but its all fun. lol

We welcome all riders, there is always tonnes of snow in Cape Breton. Like EA said, check out "stuck in a drift" That is alot of pics of us guys. We usaully find all the unbroken trails. You said you would like to try the hills in NL. Well it is absolutely amazing over there. I usually make 3-4 trips a year with the byes. We even have our own Caper Invasion trip. Anyways, take your sled home, you'll get to use it.

P.S. Our sleds in Cape Breton are stock. Haven't you heard of "Cape Breton Stock"

The Annapolis Valley has an excellent network of well maintained trails:

Here is a very active well-run snowmobile club. http://www.driftclimbers.org/

If we get snow near Halifax, there are trails 15 mins away. Otherwise you may need to haul to the valley, or the Truro Areas.

If those areas dont get any snow head to the Highlands. I towed from Halifax a few times last year on DAY trips. Leave early in the morning and come home that night. There are lots of places to stay in margaree. I like to go during the week.

I put on 1700 miles last year and did not even leave the province.

PS What school are you going to? You mention 'near the coast' in your post.

I'm either going to NSCC for engineering tech or St. Marys for business. Looks like I will have to take my sled with me. Looking forward to sledding in Nova Scotia next winter!

Which Eng Tech program are you looking at? I graduated from the Mech Eng Tech program in 2000. Great program! Got a friend who graduated from the Electronics Eng Tech program in '01 - he'd say the same.

So you'll be in Hfx either way - SMU or NSIT. Andrew B just gave you all the links you'll need to check things out from where you are. Suppose to be some good sledding around HRM. I leave my sled in Cape Breton and travel home to go out.

Applied for the Mech Eng tech program, shooting for mech or civil with power being third choice.

I went to DAL for Commerce. A good program but my buddies went to SMU and found better facilities and better program.
DAL seems to be a bit snooty if you know what I mean.

As for sledding, when you get here, give me a call.

When are u heading down this way? For Jan 1st 08?

Good choice! The program gives you a good foundation to go just about any direction you want. From Machine Design, to NDT, to HVAC, to power. The option is also there to continue on to get your Eng degree. I've been doing machine design work since I graduated - in fact, since before I graduated - the company I did my work term with offered me a job and I started with them right away - missed the grad ceremony because I was working.

Hopefully your math skills are strong. Mine weren't/aren't, but with the help of some of the guys in my class, I struggled through. It's a tough program, and alot of work. I think we started with 32 or 33 in the calss, and 13 of us graduated. That ratio is pretty typical.

As far as I know, all the guys I graduated with are employed in a field where they use their education.

Give me a shout if you've got any questions.

Thanks for the info man! I'm looking forward to it. My math skills are pretty average so I should be able to pull through it, but who knows. How do you like your current employment?

I've got no complaints about what I'm doing. I've been working for an engineer for two years or so now - just he and I in the office. Doing consulting/design work for probably 18 to 20 clients. Probably average a new job or two every week, so I don't really get a chance to get bored. And things have been busy for the last few months, so I really can't complain (average 50-60 hrs/week - more there if I want it). I've certainly got no regrets going down this career path.

don't some people trailer up into New Brunswick too? My wife is from Nova Scotia and we drive down that way at least once a year. When we drive through northern NB around Christmas time it always amazes me how much snow they have.

What would Cambellton be from Halifax, approx. 4-5 hours? I'd think that would get you to some of the best trails in the east. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Cape Breton seems to me like it would be the destination for those who like playing off trail, and NB would be the place for those who like to pile on the miles. No?

Yes, lots of people trailer up to NB (yeah 4 hours or so). If you want to put on lots of miles on groomed trails then Northern NB is great. I've probably been up there 10 times or so in 04 and 05. From Bathurst up there is usually lots of snow. Even more an hour north in Campbelton (sp?) and there you are on the border of the Gaspe, Quebec where the snow is pleantyful and the groomed trail, services and trail signage system they have is the best I've ever seen. In Bathurst the place to stay is the Atlantic Host or Days Inn. Howard Johnson for Campbelton.

Personally I prefer the Cape Breton Highlands as it has lots of groomed trails but also lots of play areas and lots of non-groomed trails - but my opinion is biased! Even better, grab the ferry and go tn NL at least once.

Either way, bring your sled and enjoy the east coast.
