How long is the riding season in Alaska? Roughly when does it start and when does it end? Thanks.
RATED-X
About 3 months dec to feb, its really short, contrary to popular belief.

Really?! Yeah that makes sense. Considering there are numerous posts as early as September talking about getting snow already. Oh I forgot, "No Vacancy" right? Your just jerking my chain, hahaha. Don't worry I'm not going to be moving up there anytime soon, if ever. I was just curious. I seen a few videos that took place in Alaska and wondered what the season was like up there. It's cool, I can find out the hard way. Have a good one.

Well you said roughly grin.png . We have snow right now, but not enuf to ride. yeah we get snow in september but it hardly ever sticks around for more than a day. if you know the right places nov- may sometimes. The best part of the season IMO is mar-apr. Whats the season in mich?

Yeah I did, didn't I wink.gif. Our season is a lot shorter than yours, we ride usually from the end of November to maybe the beginning of March, if were lucky. Last year sucked but I hear were suppose to get a good winter this year.

Damn, that's so nice. Tell me, do you guys ever get sick of riding so much? biggrin.gif wink.gif I'm guessing it's not all the same mundane trail riding day in and day out like Michigan. Mountain riding looks like a fuckin' blast. You guys have any good pictures laying around you could post? Take it easy.

Odd man,
There's pictures all over this forum from last riding season. Just scroll through the "Alaska" thread, and look for picture attachment icons. It's not even comparable to Michigan. Riding there was like going down the sidewalk. Here - you're off trail most all the time. Completely different league. Season started last week and we've ridden well into April - nigh on May in years past. When you need a fix, cause the lake effect isn't giving you the dumping they keep predicting, come on back here and enjoy the frequent pictures posted on our thread.

You mean this mountain. This is from the Susitna River, west of Talkeetna, taken a few years ago.

That's the one, spectacular thanks for the pictures. Do they let you ride in the National Parks up there or are they protected? How do your sleds handle the -45 temperatures? On second thought, how do you handle it? It must be frigid cold, especially with the wind and cruisin' on the sleds. You still bear down and get some ridin' in?
SirCATchAlot
It's a dry cold.....just stay covered well with layers and DON"T SWEAT. If you watch the forum here you will see folks talk about base and snow settling. The reason is the snow tends to be dry with little support.

I rode the 03/04 winter in the lower 48 and froze me Cahonies off at 20 above zero. I did ride in Vermont at -25 but damn it was cold.

in a lot of small towns and villages you can use your snowmachine to work, to go groccery shopping and go to school. during the winter season, a lot of people use a snowmachine as a primary mode of transportation. from where im from, that late october/early november to mid to late may.

Do people use snowmachines as their primary mode of transportation there in Anchorage? I can't imagine downtown people riding around on sleds. That would be pretty damn sweet though. How do you go grocery shopping with your sled? You hook up a trailer or what?
Jeff_G
Another Question, how do you ride in the mountains when it is dark all the time?

oh boy.

lol!! omg yea and our igloos melt in the summer we have to rebuild every winter and instead of dogs getting in our garbage the polar bears do! lol BSmeter.gif. bonus is i can climb on my sled and from the drive way take off for a all day ride and as for ridding in the dark its called a headlight

i lived out in mcgrath for 13 years and we rode are sleds to school all winter they didnt close down tell 58below so intell then your ridin your sled to school.. youd have to get a blowdryer to losen up your cylinders so you could pull the sled over

I know the trees were lost in the fire but any word on how the trails are doin up there? This fire that happend there changed the whole aspect of sledding in the Caribou Hills. With the wind that whips from the top I can only imagine what's goinbg to happen now that there are no tree's to brake the wind.

i can't imagine that it didn't make it better, some of the area burnt always has tons of snow late but it was to tight to get around , now........ we'll just have to see. it has been snowing out east for the last few days, nothing much by the road but it always changes dramatically just a little bit in. I'l be keeping a close eye on it.

Worst part is, no hard freeze yet so all the swamps and creeks are still wide open.
I'm hoping they have either replaced or repaired the burn't bridges. Also not sure if the groomers survived the fires but I don't think they did. The cabin hoppers have nothing about the fire on the website as usual!

I wish my friend still had his 52' trawler.....it was a great base camp for deer and we were talking about sledding in PWS when he sold it because of divorce.
Bering C
I am looking at a 43 ft skookum longliner/gilnetter, been thinking about getting back into fishing and I can put 4 or 5 sleds on the deck. Either way we'll be over there alot this spring. we have a truck and trailer we are just going to leave over there so we can ride later than we have been. Who needs bridges? thats what an 800 is for!

I was just reviewing some footage from last year, my last ride was May 12th.

I have been shutting down early for fishing.....My lastest ride was the week after Memorial day. If the damn trip didn't cost an arm, leg and a pint of blood I would ride all summer up on the glacier.

My last ride was Arctic Man - pretty sad =( Should have been playing with everyone up at Whittier but I was in a hurry to start playing with the 4 wheelers.
