One of my friends has lost his license this winter till march and he's paranoid about riding without it. He does mostly ditch riding in and around winnipeg and alot of trail riding, is it a big deal? i would hink they would be more concerned with drinking or stolen sleds? anyways he was talking about just riding with no ID, but i duno if thats so smart? he's worried that he'll get a ticket and they'll lengthen his suspension? has anyone encountered this?
proxJ
I dont take my lisnce when i ride, i dont find a need for it i just take a card or some cash. I have never been hasseled about it.

thats what i told him to do i don't see what the problem could be?

I have yet to be stopped around wpg. only time was out by westhawk and they only wanted to see registration and trail pass. i would ride and not worry about it, at best they will ask to see the registration and trail pass and he can still have motor vehicles in his name with out a valid license.

cheers

same here lots of friends and my self no license but still ride they've never asked for mine any way.

lol

i beleive there may be a few people that actually know the answer... but i beleive if you lost it due to a few wobbly pops... you actually legally cant drive anything motorized.. including a sled..

now do they check that - can they on the trail?? (or just registration and trail pass), i dont know never ever been checked for anything not even a trail pass...

i know someone will correct me if i am wrong wink.gif

i think that you guys are on glue for posting such stupid topic and yes you get caught you will lose your ride for 30 or 90 days and if suspended for dui you could go to the hotel for some time as while. get real cops read this as well stuuupid

I have friends that have no license. The only thing that i would do is make sure they have the sled registered/insured and they have a trail pass. Plate has the sticker and they have a snow pass, off to check the next dude in the pack.
snopro31
when have you seen a cop on a trail stopping people?

never happens
bigslydog
Yep been asked for my licence on the trail...And yes not a good thing if you get caught...a buddy of mine was comming from winnipeg in his car got nailed for DUI after processing he jumped on his sled got stuck in the ditch...RCMP stoped to "help him out" DUI#2 in less than 4 hours ouch. He never did any time in the slammer...but very expensive lesson.

Problem is...according to the Off Road Vehicles Act

Off-road vehicle registrable under Drivers and Vehicles Act

26(3) Notwithstanding subsection (1), no person shall operate an off-road vehicle which is a motorcycle, a four-wheel drive motor vehicle or a snow vehicle registrable under The Drivers and Vehicles Act, unless he or she is 16 years of age or older and holds a licence other than one that has a restriction on operating off-road vehicles.

Production of driver's licence

26(4) Where the operator of an off-road vehicle is required to hold a driver's licence, the operator shall produce the licence to a peace officer on demand.

Licence requirement

35(2) No person shall operate an off-road vehicle directly across a roadway and shoulder unless he or she holds a licence other than one that has a restriction on operating off-road vehicles.
peej
You need a valid licence to operate an off road vehicle on the highway, anyone here not cross the highway on each and every single trip? Now, I've heared about the mounties being quite proactive in the selkirk area being out on sleds and doing those checks mentioned above as never happening, but as for the mountie that is nice and warm in his cruiser with a coffee, I am sure he is most likely to be waiting for you at one of those highway crossings that you require a licence to actually use. Roll the bones, but it has been my experience that it will be that one time you've had a few throttle tighteners and are at the furthest point of your trip when you'll get checked. m2c.gif

it had nothing to do with alcohol it was for speeding tickets, but sounds like he better not risk it lol last thing he needs is his sled taken

it don't matter, he is a suspended driver and will lose sled for 30 days in a compound plus the towing charges and government fines and storage costs. then liscence will be more money. not that i woudn't do it, just wouldnt risk it by stopping.

i went all last year and the previous 3 years befor that with no licence (i was 15 till july 21)

but than again, i live out in the middle of butt fu*k your sister's gotta preatty mouth haha, so we dont see many RCMP.

and if your buddy is soo scared, think. you guys are riddin machines designed spacificaly for snow and driving high speeds on it, so there is no way that a cop will catch you... unless he is driving a sled too...and that also depends on how many cc's they are ridin, a 500cc will never catch a 800cc.

I can tell your only 16...they don't have to catch you...just stay close enough and then just pick up the pieces when you mess up...seen a lot of hero's get owned on big bore machines by an experienced rider on a smaller cc'd machine

I've never seen a sled yet that can outrun a radio.

You need to carry your valid license to be legal on your sled, why is this even a question?

Let's not forget the fact too that every snowmobiler seems to stop for a bite to eat at some time or another. And I have to say that I very RARELY see snowmobilers eat without having a beer or two....or more during they're meal. I've seen many cops parked outside a popular snowmobile stop (Restaurant/Bar) waiting to check for licences, registration, and trail passes, as well as Alcohol consumption. Point being here, like was mentioned, you need a valid drivers licence to operate ANY motorized vehicle. As for those that drive without one and have never gotten stopped? That's precisely it, you've been lucky enough NOT to get caught.
snopro31
out of 16 years snowmobiling, i have seen the cop sleds 2 times. first time they were pulling a tube on the lake, with no helmets, and 2 people on the tube no helmets, and 2 on the sled no helmets(way to spend a message), second time they werent on duty and were out showing a new cop to the area around. we were told when we signed up at a poker derby they were going to checking licenses, passes, and registration before everyone left. never happened. saw them later that day when we got back to town at the resturant having coffee.

an NRO did tell me one day i had a weird looking sled while i was having lunch. first sled he saw all day with registration and a trail pass. asked if he gave tickets, or called the RCMP to give tickets. nope just asked how the riding was.

then you hear people complaining of no money for grooming, shacks, equipment. went on a ride last boxing day. opening day for trails(officially i guess), all sleds in our group had passes, registration, licenses, etc... got to the warm up shack where there were around 30 sleds. about 10 sleds out of the thirty had snopasses, and registration(not including ours). what a kick in the teeth. the club members where there and some of the no-snopass people had the never to complain about the bumps.
fufanu360
you guys actually register your snowmobiles??? hahahaaha like thats gonna happen... wow i guess im lucky where we live but the cops around here arent worried about us on guys on sleds...
Laraby
I have never personaly see the cops on the trails but i have heard all kinds of nasty tricks they pull. Stop on the trail or on a lake, hood up and just wait. You pull up being the nice guy to see if the need a hand. BAMM! Here's your ticket. Not a good way to do it because chances are next time the nice guy sees someone that looks like they are in trouble they will just keep on riding.
proxJ
The only time i have ever been stoped is in the whiteshell, of course i had my trail pass and registration in the sled so it was no problem. Iam prone to leaving pockets open so i try not to even take a phone some times just use one when iam there. Again his choice wether he wants to ride or not but i figure u ride like a humanbein you shouldnt have a problem.
monster energy kid
i do not see wut the big deal is i've personally been stoped once by the cops and they just asked to see the registration i have also been in a warm up shack on the trail with a few buddies of mine and the cops came never asked to see anything and we were the only once there and were all under age i personally don't see wut the problem is
snopro31
were your parents there?

or someone over 18 with a license?
monster energy kid

No point debating this . You can get away with anthing for some time , but not all the time ,you seem to forget that if you get into an accident and injure someone, or worse yet kill someone you will lose everything including your freedom. Driving without a licence is not worth the risk!

I agree entirely here. The whole point to this is that's it's really not worth the risk. Sooner or later the horseshoes up peoples arses are going to fall out and it'll all catch up. Hopefully when that happens, no one is hurt in the process. I just think that in order to keep the trails safer, and the sport of snowmobiling enjoyable, people need to be more responsible. The more responsible riders out there, the more we set a good example for those joining the club. m2c.gif

i guess it is just the risk i am willin to take, we just lookin to have some fun out there
